I'm looking to buy a longer surf rod so I can get a little more distance. I'm looking at different rods with different amounts of guides. What is the general rule?

Don't get a longer rod that you can handle. The guides act like ball bearings on a rod, the more the better, to a certain degree. On a 12' rod you will need at least 12 guides.

12' Ugly stick 2 piece surf rod. I have 3 of them and they have fuji guides. $200. I pair them with an old, well maintainted, Shimano bait runner 6500. Great for wading out, making the cast and then backpeddling quickly with the baitrunner on and the bail closed. I've gotten tossed a couple of times, but in SoCal, it's worth it. I go after 100 lb batrays, leaopard sharks, and Shovelheads.
Tight lines and tails up!
(Penn makes a bait runner too for $200. I love it!)
