Here's a picture of a yellowtail caught by
Brandon Dawson off of Crystal Pier, in San Diego. 32 lbs. A few days ago, while spear fishing at the same place he got a fifty pounder. He posted a picture of that also.
I asked him if I could post this and he said yes.
I've caught everything that I've gone after in the ocean, but I've never landed a yellowtail yet. It's not for lack of trying either. LOL

They are pretty solid fish.
In the tuna type family.
Other fish like the bass are like the freshwater bass.

Here's what our bass in the bay look like.
14" and over are legal to keep.
We have different bass here in the bay.
This one is a spotted bass. The most common type to catch.
Majority of the fishermen use soft lures on a jighead. Catch and release is what most people do.
You can walk along the shoreline and catch them. That's not me with the fish, it's a picture that someone here posted.
The other fishing site that I belong to has fishing contests in the bay or surf multiple times during the year. They will give you a tag made only for that day. Take a picture of the fish with a tape and the tag. Biggest and smallest fish are the winners.
Afterwards it's party time, everyone brings food to share, you have to say what you're bringing so that it's not all the same.
The BBQs are going. People bring hot dogs, fish, side dishes, chips and soft drinks, paper plates, plastic cutlery, etc.
One nice lady always brings ribs. Must cost a small fortune for her. We offer her money to help out but she won't take it.
Wife and I mostly get skunked, but it's fun talking to the people that post on the fishing site.

Yellowtail are in the Jack family
One of the hardest fighting fish in the ocean in my opinion. All Jack's fight hard. Such relatives of yellowtail are jack crevale, amberjack, roosterfish, giant trevale. Catching one off crystal pier is very uncommon though yellowtail frequent those waters almost year around.
