Here's a picture of a yellowtail caught by
Brandon Dawson off of Crystal Pier, in San Diego. 32 lbs. A few days ago, while spear fishing at the same place he got a fifty pounder. He posted a picture of that also.
I asked him if I could post this and he said yes.
I've caught everything that I've gone after in the ocean, but I've never landed a yellowtail yet. It's not for lack of trying either. LOL

Just keep trying!
I was you for a couple of seasons and then picked one up trolling a Rapala X Rap. I then learned that I get yellows on the troll at 7 knots and also by fly lining live chovies or macks. It's truely about 50/50 so far, so I use both ways all the time. I have a pollicy...

I've trolled Rapalas off of Pucky Point at the Coronado Island, nada.
Wife and I would take the boat out and fish the floating kelp patties. Lures and bait, still nothing. We get other fish, bonito and barracudas.
I caught a few jack crevalle in San Diego Bay.
That's a Penn jig master for comparison of the fish size.
Someday. LOL

Nice Jack....
Never caught one, and I feel your pain when it comes to yellows! I gotta make my way back down to SD. We did a 6 pack to Coronado and caught 1000lbs of yellow fin! It took a while to find em but once on them, we limited and held them there long enough for the captains friend to come up and get on em too!
Great trip...gotta go back!

I've never been on a tuna trip, except for small skipjacks.
Lots of sport fishing boats making multiple day trips for the tunas here in SD.
When they are in close the full day boats go after them.
