That is definitely a king mackerel, quite a catch off of the pier.

Agreed, on both points. What an amazingly bright rainbow iridescence the photographer caught this fish displaying. How is one supposed to try explaining what color a King Mackeral is to a person who does not fish? You simply have to see one to understand.

woodguru, thanks for the info on the Cadence Primo, Stella, and Lux. Great excuse for me to use when I waste a couple of hours @ the Bait& Tackle shop.

I don't believe there is such a thing as time wasted while at/in a "Bait& Tackle" shop...I may do a bit of lingering but never wasting.

I was thinking more along the lines of the disappearance of the local knowledge & wisdom those places typically hold.
None of those big cargo ships contain anything that can replace or take the place of that kind of local treasure.

Yes, it is also true that places of that sort are becoming increasingly rare to come across, to the detriment of us all.

I have bought deep sea reels and spinning reels over the years. I am still using reels that I bought 15 yrs ago that were cheap back then and still going strong. Use them in both waters.
The key is washing them after salt use and keeping them greased properly and taken care of. They are mechanical tools nothing more. Treat them right and they should last.

Not that many people around nowadays that are willing to even bother an attempt at fixing something, anything.
That is a very sad state of affairs if you ask me.

I am as far from a violent person as one can be but if I was ever to find out who stole my tackle from my garage back in the mid nineties...they had better have their affairs in order.
That is the one thing that would find me mad enough to kill.

It’s an art. Just learning what you can do with a rod can go so far. There’s always more to learn. And, not least, there’s luck.

Are you making reference to Possum's post?

So is there one available that just covers fishing for less money?

Forget the fishing, wind can make anything kayak challenging.

Regarding the video from Gordon:

That ties right straight into the advice I shared earlier here about baiting your own hook…if she won’t touch a worm, she’s not worth joining you as a first mate. I mean, if she can’t handle that, what does that say about the potential of the two of you being able to happily partake in any of the other soft, wiggly & wet aspects of life, huh?

Does that “Sportsman License” include hunting privileges?

Understanding the likely average age of the forum members is on the downward side of “The Hill,” I was pushing encouragement toward the consideration of a lifetime license purchase to be made as a gift for younger family members.

Using the Georgia example provided above:
For a one-time expenditure of $500 or $600 you could gift fishing and/or hunting privileges to someone for a potential 80 or 90 years, realistically.
Say the one you are going to buy for is 15yrs old at time of purchase. That cost will be $600. At an assumed life expectancy of 75yrs, that works out to be $10 per year(75-15=60yrs_$600/60yrs=$10/yr).
What else could you go out and buy today for six bills that will offer/provide/permit/allow/enable 60 years(or more) worth of outdoor awesomeness without ever needing any repairs or additional investment in order for it to remain as functional at the end of those years as it will be the first day you bought it for that person? Will the cost of a fishing license be the same in 50 years as it is today? Not likely! Running the real numbers makes it almost stupid to not purchase one…given you have someone to purchase one for, of course.
