I think the Penn Spinfisher VI is overrated at its current price. The Daiwa BG has been the best reel for the price but the price has been creeping up lately.

Well, if it was a truck or boat, I would say, "check the nut behind the wheel!" But a reel, perhaps it is the user, not the reel! I have often found that decisions about the quality of a reel is largely based upon the expertise of the user! Just Sayin...RJS

Any reel will catch fish. But will it catch fish for 20-plus years? That is the question I ask myself when I buy any tackle.

Oink! OINK! Well, having a 20-year horizon for a fishing reel is terrific, except I don't have 20 years now. If that could happen, I would be 110 years old! I can barely walk now, so fishing would be a problem, think what i would be like 10 or 20 years later.

All the 'snotty nosed' kids would be grown and parents of even and bearing even more unmanageable offspring! Just Sayin...RJS

I'm behind you by about 15 years so my 20-year horizon includes grandkids. I have reels now that are almost 20 years old. I like stuff to last especially now that I'm fishing saltwater.

I've got lots of rods and reels that are alot older than 20 years.
I've got a few that are over 40 years old and they still catch fish.😊🤠👍

Most overrated is newer Penn reels. I won't purchase them. Most underrated is the Daiwa Luvias reels. JDM and smooth as glass at about $250 give of take $10. I have a few BG reels up to 8000 size and they're nice, they're nowhere as smooth as my Luvias reels. I also own 2 Avet and 2 Seigler conventional reels 1 of the Avet reels is a 50W size for tuna this fall.

Personally I look to handing them to my grandsons.
Price doesn't always mean quality.

Many item once made in USA are no longer made here.
Check into how many companies are now having other countries make the stuff for them.
That or foreign companies now own the whole thing.

Last summer I gave one of my grandsons a Browning Ultra Light rod I bought in 1971.

I have a few even older than that Steve. Granted they were my dad's that I got when he passed, but some are over 50 years old and still catch fish. Also got his tackle boxes with some very old lures in them from around the same time frame.

My dad died when I was 11 in '64.
I got all his fishin stuff, big tackle box ,rods and reels . When i went into the military in '71 it was in the garage. When i came back from overseas in '73 it had dissapeared. Not sure what happened to all of it.☹👎

Sorry to hear you lost your dad's stuff. I guess I was lucky as far as getting drafted. I was too young for Nam and too old for the Persian Gulf.
