Its the varients that are the problem. I thought and thought and thought and came to the conclusion that It may be time for her to find another job. She is taking the chance of contacting the virus and bringing it home to those kids. She is also taking the chance of injuring herself by catching it.
So as I said before think.X3
Not a medical pro but here is my opinion
You cannot get into a baseball game carrying a sub machine gun. Even if you work there. Don't you know why?
So why would you even ask about not being free to possibly infect others with a virus known to kill people.
Not only that its somewhat bordering on suicidal.

Only difference is the availability of the natural prey.
Yes to the above

Try stink bait.
fish the bottom in deepest water for the big ones.
"Bites on", a real happening, is when the ice goes out and the winter killed fish are blown to the windward bank.
Catfish gorge themselves because all winter food is scarce.

Depends on how you are fishing. Pole and line-- any of the above methods including stink baits. Trot lines-- worms, cut bait, live bait. Bank lines aka ditty poles or limb lines--seems like live bait works best. I've also used worms

Fish the windward side. dead fish will accumulate there after ice out. free lunch.

Best advise I can give you is do what the locals do.
Watch where they fish. Stop and talk to them asking "hows fishing." Many times they are bored and welcome the conversation.
Outside of that for cats look for deep still water, Cats are bottom feeders so fish there. In the summer its cooler in the deep holes. At night the biguns come into the shallows to feed.
Stink baits are good. And being a college student they are also the cheapest unless you have time to go night crawler hunting.
Best of luck
