Used to follow the NFL avidly. Not so much anymore since it has gone Woke.
Grew up in central Illinois and have been a Chicago Bears fan since I was kid.

Same here. Used to watch and follow the NFL religiously. When the “taking a knee” to protest whatever started is when I reached for the remote and said goodbye. I have better things to do than watch a bunch of spoiled millionaires pitch hissy fits.

It is hard to narrow it down but I guess it is a tie between a ’65 Mustang (bright orange with mag wheels and a 289 with a stick on the floor) and a ’75 Chevy K5 Blazer 4x4 (A/T tires on white spoker wheels and a 350). Since I had those at different times in my life it is hard to say which was the best. Had the Mustang when I was in college and it was a fun car. Got the Blazer when I had my first boat and needed something to tow it with and to brave the blizzards up in northern Illinois. I have had some kind of 4x4 every since

I vote yes for a recipe section. When you work hard to catch them, you want to prepare them in the best way.

Best place to launch is at Lawson’s Landing. It is just off Rt 70 before you cross the bridge coming into New Bern from the Kinston direction. After launching, motor under the bridge and there is lots of shallow water where you always see crab pots with their markers.

If you are going for bass, most of the bass boats are working around the docks. We have also had some luck fishing around the point from the railroad bridge down by the dam and on down that shoreline. My son caught a 4 and 6 lb LM in that area. We are coming into one of the best times of the year to fish for bass. The main problem with High Rock is that it is fished pretty heavy and there are frequent fishing tournaments on the lake.

We have a place on High Rock lake and do some fishing on and off. You didn’t say if you are going to be fishing from shore or from a boat. We keep a boat on the lake and can’t say much about shore fishing although I do see people fishing near the bridges (either highway or railroad) although we have caught some decent fish from our dock. There are several species that are worth going after. There are crappie (particularly in the spring and the fall), largemouth bass, and some sizable catfish. We fish mainly for bass and almost exclusively with lures. During the spring and fall they are in the shallower water but not so much during the summer. They go deeper and hang out around ledges and drop-off. Mostly, it just takes time and persistence to find the productive areas. As you know, it is a big lake.

Ditto to J in Cleveland. They do have good action. You would think they would catch something.

Have had 3 different labs and they all loved the water and swam like fish. Now have a bulldog mix and she won’t go near the water and we suspect she would sink like a rock if she ever went in but we have never forced the issue, even in our pool.

Forgot to mention, there are also several fishing clubs around. Those can be a great source of information and a chance to meet up with some possible fishing buddies.

Hey vdawg
A fellow New Bernian here. Don’t know what other fishing you have done but this is a very different place to fish. Best advice to try to get some ideas is to get a local guide. There are several around. This time of year, the speckled trout are running in the shallow tributary streams to the Neuse. I caught my first one of them several years ago on Christmas Eve. The coastal waters also offer a huge variety of fish but there is definitely a learning curve. I don’t really do any fishing in this area anymore. We keep our boat on an inland lake and it is mostly crappie, bass, and catfish.

I have both a portable Garmin Striker 4 and s fixed larger unit on our boat. With two people fishing, only one can see the fixed unit and the portable unit can be situated so that it can be seen in the front of the boat. Other times, when running the boat from the front-mounted trolling motor, even with only one person, the portable unit can be situated for best visibility. We have both transducers mounted, one on the front and one on the back but it obviously doesn’t have to be that way. All of that is by way of saying that even if you do get a boat later on and can mount a fixed unit, there are still uses for the portable unit and they are not that expensive. The Strker 4 comes in a self-contained carry case with 6 volt battery and a transducer that can be mounted in a variety of ways including a through the hull mount for use in a kayak.

Garmin Striker 4 is also an option. Comes with a small rechargable battery.

The Hurricane Sun Deck or Sport Deck make a good hybrid boat. I have the Sun Deck (a dual console boat) with a removable trolling motor and removable front and back swivel fishing seats and a built-in live well on ours for fishing. It has 4 batteries; 2 in back for starting, etc., and 2 mounted under the drivers console with an on-board charger for the trolling motor. For cruising or skiing, it has a removable bimini and a ski pole that mounts where the rear fishing seat mounts. You can get them from a 18' 7" to 23' or 24' with a 150 or 200 Hp motor and they will easily hold 6-8 people. Something to consider.
