I haven's heard any news lately pertaining to the silver bass run in the Trenton area. If so, what are the best bait's?

i don't know the state of the run, but you cannot go wrong with a 1/8 or 1/4 oz roadrunner white marabou. i am told that very small jerk baits may even be better, catch two fish on one cast. if the run at trenton is at full blast that jerk bait could reduce your fishing daY to 45 minutes. right now some say that the run has bypassed trenton and is way up by the steel mill. but i have heard this before and have gone to trenton and caught plenty of fish.

i went to elizabeth park yesterday, followed by the pier just south of there (i forget its name). there were zero people fishing at the park, i worked my favorite spot and no hits. i should have known: zero people = zero fish. at the pier there were about 30 people all up and down it but most at the offshore end. i saw two fish carried home and saw two caught in an hour. i got one hit. there was a boat fishing about 50 yards out and i saw them catch one. evidently the run is just starting.

why a nuisance? they taste very good, they certainly fight more than walleyes and you are allowed 25 of them. what's to complain about?

Thanks, I'm going over there daily to check it out. Not here yet but yes they are fun to catch.

i have caught many, mostly from a boat. when you say trenton from the shore,do you mean the fairly new pier just south of trenton? that should be good any time now. it is just downriver from the most productive area i know but which can only be fished from a boat -- between that pier and (going upriver) the exit channel from the power plant. that used to be a warm-water discharge but the plant is closed, yet the fish still come there every spring. soon if not now the shoreline at elizabeth park will be crowded by people fishing from the shore and catching many. there are plenty of other places as the fish move upriver.

Check out Buck fishes on you tube papa jack. I just typed in bank fishing Detroit river. It looks like he's fishing at a park below a bridge 👍

buck fishes is on the canadian side. shore fishing seems to be more successful on that side. yes, belle isle is a good idea. the water there has been cleaned up with the entry of river water into the lagoons. the lagoons have bluegills and largemouth bass. the one at the upstream end of belle isle, the largest one, looks the best.

I'm guessing it was just the time of day you were there.
I heard again today that people were catching walleye from the pier.
Just after sunrise until maybe 10A was the last time I was there and saw catches.

I hear walleye are already being caught in the Trenton area. I hope to get to the pier at the Detroit River Wildlife Refuge. Have not heard anything but I imagine they're being caught all along the Detroit River from Wyandotte east to Belle Isle. Walleye typically fade out in late April to early May when the silver bass take over.

Last year I was in Trenton one weekend and everyone was catching walleye. Next weekend, nothing but silvers.

From shore, silvers are definitely more plentiful and easier to catch.

I may be in Trenton, hopefully the 30th or 31st. I'll be sure to report back.

If you like catfish, Macomb next to the DTE plant is always a great spot.

Good Luck

Where were they fishing from exactly, in trenton when everybody was catching walleyes from the shore?

i have not seen a lot of walleyes caught from the shore on the detroit side. i have tried some of the spots but not thoroughly. belle isle would seem to be worth a try. i usually go in a boat and we catch plenty. the best shore fishing i see done is by canadians in windsor. they're always catching them. one is a fb friend of mine aiham alyoubi. check him out. another, also on fb, is buck fishes. he too gets a lot. there is a walleye group for detroit river that anyone can join, but recently questions were raised there about shore fishing and nobody who had yet commented had any detailed suggestions, just back of the post office and behind what was the joe louis arena. there is another canadian, domenico quattrochiochi, who was running a facebook group for shore fishermen but i don't know if it continues. there is a pier on the river just south of elizabeth park that was installed a couple of years ago and it reaches well out to the edge of the drop-off just south of one of the best (reachable only by boat) silver (white) bass spots that i know of. that pier would be a reasonable spot to try for walleyes. it is ten miles south of detroit on jefferson ave, beyond trenton but north of gibraltar. you will be able to see its signs on jefferson.

other spots includ just north of the belle isle bridge on the detroit shore (i used to hear about this), anywhere along the riverwalk if they don't have laws against it, at the foot of west grand blvd, at ft. dearborn, in the river rouge park just south of the inactive electric plant, at the foot of southfield road, and some possible spots along the wyandotte riverfront and even in trenton. elizabeth park in trenton offers a long fishable shoreline but i never hear of walleyes being caught there, yet it fills up with people for the silver bass run in may and june (i mean hundreds of people -- and the chinese are the most successful; i think i know their secret but i am not telling!). that is a fun afternoon because people of all backgrounds and countries of origin are having fun and making their livings at the same time!

if you find good shore walleye fishing in the detroit area, please post. we have many boat fisherpeople, but need knowledge about the shore fishing. i especially need it as my wife loves to fish but is scared of boats.

I use lots of ice with it melting and draining so the fish are cooling down more. Melting ice transfer heat into to water so letting drain will keep the fish cooler. If the fish are fileted and don't have any skin on them then definitely don't want them in water. It can get bacteria growing. You just want the fish as cold as possible and cleaned ASAP blood and guts in them can ruin the high quality flavor. Keeping them cold increase the quality the sooner they are cleaned and chilled the higher the quality. Fry or cook fish as soon as you get off the water sometime. Save some of the same fish and fry it after it is in your refrigerator a week later. Freeze it and eat it later you will taste a difference.

you will not lose taste if you freeze the filets in bags of water, provided you had put them on ice promptly when you caught them.

get a small, round fishing float just heavy enough to cast -- 1/8 -- 1/4 oz. they used to make clear ones for this purpose but a red and white one would probably be fine. clamp it on about 1-2 feet ahead of your fly. this will allow you to work the fly in shallow water, which will be fine for bluegills. for deeper water, a small sinker will do. get those that have a piece of rubber in their middle. you just slide the line in and twist the rubber. holds in place and will no damage the line. then yu wan work your flies deep, even on the bottom. should be fun!

i love canoes. never had a kayak. if you get the standard aluminum canoe based on the old grumman design it is very stable, very difficult to flip. once you become skilled at paddling it is extremely easy to maneuver. (no need for synchronized paddling.) it is so stable you can stand up to cast. i rigged mine with a 36 lb thrust trolling motor, with the battery way in front for balance. I turned the head around. then i sat facing the stern on a cooler just in front of the rear thwart. this became a very controllable bass boat, fishing from either sitting position or standing. when standing my calves would be against the thwart. i used this for years on lake st. clair, the st. clair river and chautauqua lake. never came close to capsizing or falling out. it had float chambers at each end but i never tested it by submerging it. my grandfather trolled for muskies at chautauqua from the late 40s into the 60s, paddling from 6 am till noon every day. in the later years a friend welded outriggers on it with oarlocks so he would sit in the middle and row. made one of the greatest rowing boats you could imagine. canoes are great! transporting them can be a bit difficult, though, as the usually have to on top of a car and the lift is difficult because the center of gravity is low and the canoe "wants" to flip to upright as you want to put it on the car upside down. but i'm telling you, you will love a good canoe! one time, in october at chautauqua, the smallmouth were biting like crazy but the water was so cold that i would have to put a rug down on the bottom of the canoe as my feet, in good boots, would get too cold. i wore a snow suit to fish, then had to take it off the moment i arrived on land due to being too hot. catching 5 lb. smallmouths....

i eat them without trimming any red meat all and they are just fine. throw them on ice the moment you catch them. filet them as soon as you get home. wash the filets in water. freeze them in ziplock bags half filled with water. they will be like fresh caught next year.
