Thanks everyone for all the responses on fishing a large lake that I had very little information prior to fishing. I did pick up quite a few perch on the East side with crawlers, but they were on the small side, also a couple Goby ,damn things are getting into lakes all over Michigan. Fishing on the N. W. Side later afternoon picked up about a dozen perch big enough to take home, but No Walleye this trip. Will plan on staying later to fish the Walleye next time I get a chance to head that way.

Glad you had some success!

Will probably target Walleye, but Perch are never out of the target either. I have also fished Black lk. Yrs ago , but spend more time exploring the U.P. lakes than under the bridge. I will post a report after my trip tomorrow on Hubbard lk. and hopefully a few photos 🐟

I know that lately they have been getting LOTS of perch. Close to limits at times. I believe they are using minnows but don't quote me on that. They may be using crawlers. The East Bay is usually good for perch as a starting point and there is a DNR launch right there. Walleye are caught in the bay and just outside it as well as the south end at sundown until after dark when trolling using bottom bouncers with crawlers on spinners or crank baits like rapala's, bandits, any shad type bait. Good luck. I hope this helps. It can be a tough to fish.

It's definately different! I'm thinking it MIGHT be an old dinosaur fossil but I'd be willing to bet it's from something more recent. The DNR could tell you.

It sounds like that Osprey may have caught a needlefish. They are bright silver and long and very skinny. Sounds like you had a great trip. I miss the saltwater!

I know a charter boat captain in that area that has been catching a mixed bag of lakers, atlantics and walleye in Alpena. Search on Facebook for chum bucket charters and you will see what he's been catching. He always posts pics of his catch.

I recently moved to the Traverse area after 45+ years near Grand Rapids. Hope to explore fishing in lakes and streams nearby.

Welcome aboard Duckie! You have more lakes, rivers and streams in that area than you'll ever be able to fish most likely. Lol. Have fun trying though! It's a beautiful area with lots of fishing opportunties. Like was already said, Fishyaker is the man over in that area.

Ok so we were scheduled to stay close to Mackinac city but place called and told us they overbooked so we couldn’t get our site that week. So we now secured a campsite near petoskey. I am currently looking at charters but if anyone on here is from that area I would appreciate any info especially places to shore fish as will be doing that daily. Fishyaker had given me lots of info from Mackinac area but this is southwest about an hour.

I believe Fishyaker lives near Traverse City which is in that general area. I would bet he can inform you of some charters in that area. Good luck fishing!

It is now March 18, 2023. The temperature of Lake Huron is 33 Fahrenheit. It has been snowing most of the day. I informed my wife that I plan to take a day trip over to the mouth of the Alabaster/Whitney Drain, also known as the East Branch of the Au Gres River. This place used to get some ink from a Michigan writer/fisherman named Dick Swan. He was instrumental in popularizing light line techniques for relatively large (at least by fresh water standards) fish. I have tried to find some writing on this area that is recent, to no avail. The water is a little cold, yet, but I figure to get over there in about ten days. Just as young Mr. Pip, I have great expectations.

I know smelt and steelhead still run there. I believe brown trout also. Pretty sure it's a bit early for browns and smelt but there should be steelhead there now. We have steelhead in the AuSable most of the year now thanks to a couple different strains ( spring spawners as well as fall spawners ). Good luck and be sure to take pictures and post them on here if you catch anything. We love seeing what everybody is catching.
