Did some daytime fishing today at jetty park and caught some nice size permit, pompano,Sheepshead and mackerel. Been going there once a week for the last month and have been catching lots of fish-most on shrimp. If you in the area it’s worth the trip .

Thinking about trying my hand at surf fishing next week. Any ideas what I should be using for bait?

Sand fleas and finger mullet?

Sand fleas always work for me. Surf fish in Melbourne area all the time and haven’t had much luck with finger mullet.

Hi James
Welcome to the forum. I live In Melbourne and fish about 3 times a week. Fresh and salt , although lately just salt. Last 3 days have been quite except for some jacks and it’s not just me , I don’t see anyone catching anything from the beach.

That’s funny major, small world I fished there last night for an hour . I love watching all the planes and copters taking off when i fish there. I Always catch tons of trout on that causeway but not much else. What are you catching there?

Hi Micro
nothing more aggravating then seeing fish and not being able to catch them. I fish the rivers for tarpon often and use shiners and other small baitfish to catch them. Sometimes they just don't want to eat no matter what you throw at them. If you think seeing them and not getting a bite is aggravating wait till you hook a few and they throw the hook. Took me losing a few until I figured out how to keep them on the hook. Circle hook definitely help so make sure you use them.

Hi Kresimir
I fish in Vero beach some times (a little north of Stewart) and often catch Whiting, Sheepshead, blue fish, spanish mackeral, drum ,pompano and catfish from the beach. Once the temps go up a little I usually get some Snook and Tarpon.

Hi Laura:
Larry hit most of it right on
I have been Surf fishing a lot the past few weeks have caught a lot of fish species.
On Monday in March they open the roads around Stick Marsh and you can catch nice size bass from the shore.
I Do a lot of fishing in the Indian Rivers and catch tons of spotted seatrout every time out.
Tarpon and Snook are plentiful in the Sebastian area rivers this time of year.

New to Fishing stage, Moved to Melbourne about a year ago from up north and fish several times a week. Started with the fresh water Bass and now fish everything (fresh, brackish, salt). Been doing a lot of surf casting the past few weeks and caught about 7 species ,love the variety . Thanks to the Admins for running such a great site where people like me can share what's going on in our area and also grab some general fishing knowledge !
