Thanks Chuck. This Spring has been the worst one for fishing in a long while. The river lakes are still loaded with floating timber and debris.
Some of the lakes are stocked with trout and a few with salmon. Some others are stocked with channel catfish, and a couple with walleye. The state doesn't stock any bass or crappie, so it's all natural reproduction. They also have a pike program but it's very limited.

Thanks Fred.

After our frost melted, I headed out to Beseck for a few hours. 44° at the ramp @ 10am, and the water temperature was 56.8°. Only a light breeze when I launched, but it picked up on and off all day. Most of my Bass spots were vacant but I caught a 2lb2oz Largemouth near the dam after an hour of looking. I checked the shallow end of the lake but saw no signs of beds. The warmest water I found was 59.5°. I fished docks all around the lake with no luck, but did catch a 1lb2oz buck on a blowdown. There were clouds of algae streaking the water, about 1-2 feet deep, all around the lake. Kinda unusual for this lake. It was an enjoyable day, and the trees around the lake are ahead of the one's at my house, so maybe spring is actually gonna happen. 🤣

Glad you got out there Fred .wind here has been pretty rough . Had every intention of taking my kayak out to a few small lakes and ponds around here, but noooo , when I saw what the wind was doing around here past few days, that wasn’t happenin’. Am curious if they have fish stocking programs at those lakes you fish ?

I've have buzz baits and want to buy a whopper plopper for bass & northern pike.

Can I use a swivel and leader with these or should I tie them on directly? If so what lb. test should I use?

If you could buy one whopper plopper what color? In Youtube videos I often see the one that looks like a perch.

Thanks

I have used whopper plopper lures since I learned about them years back . I have always used 30- 40 braid tied to a small swivel attached to the plopper . Do not bother yourself with the concern that the fish “ will see” the braid. They don’t really care. 30-40 braid is small diameter anyway. The main line - to leader - to plopper thing is just an un- necessary step than can increase chances of a knot failure. The braid floats , and even while you shouldnt do a he- man hookset when you get bit ( just a waist high rod sweep will do ) the braid will not stretch enough to cause you to miss the fish. I use the small swivel because the cigar - shape of the bait ( 110-130 - 190 size) will allow for some roll of the bait . The small swivel usually takes care of that issue .But I usually don’t try to burn a plopper across the water because the faster you reel , the better chance of a roll over .A medium retrieve is the best . I’m not familiar with the action of the smaller versions . As for color, there are many great fisherman - catching colors ($$$) available for this lure, as many as you could imagine.. But a great universal color that gets bit everywhere is bone. See, most bass don’t see color on top of the lure, they mainly see the underside . Hope you find this helpful .

Lake Ray Hubbard Bass Fishing Report - April 22nd, 2024
Wind: 12-15mph
Depth 3-5 Feet
Temps: 68 degrees
Clarity: Stained/Dirty
The lake is fishing well, after 2 inches of rain and a cold snap a couple days ago the fishing had slowed down a bit. Today the bass are active and moving back into shallow water. Male bass are eating well. We caught a bunch today in several spots on the lake. This is a good sign that the full moon is signaling time for another spawn.
Alternate between fast moving baits that mimic shad and creature baits or jigs. The male bass are gorging because they will be sitting on nests for a week or so. Now's a good time to get to the lake. Since they are shallow you will be able to find them near shore.(if shore fishing)

Hope this helps.

So the day started out a normal beautiful day with no wind and fish to be had. Was on the lake early, and caught my first fish at 6:45am. Rest of the morning hit a lot of different spots and picked up 7 more in the 1-2lb range. About 12:30 decided to flip a new worm for a few casts. Most of you who know me would never guess I would try this. It was a fatty 6" Watermelon/Red Flake someone had given me. Now the FUN begins.

First off this all happened because I made a bet with Matt (Bassmatter) on who would catch the biggest fish this year. After flipping this big old worm a few times to no avail, it was time to head in. Figured I would flip it out there and let it sit while I put everything away. Put my rod in the holder and started cleaning things up. Half way through putting things away, I glance over at my rod, and the line is straight. Figured it just got snagged in a tree, and went back to putting things away. Glance over again, and hey, my line is now moving. Picked up the rod and discover there is a really nice fish on. After a really good battle, I land him and dang this is a BIG one, bigger than any Matt has landed so far! Our rule for the bet is a pic with the scale attached and readable. So I weigh it and it is exactly 5.0lb. I have a little bracket that I set the phone on for pics. Problem, I had put it away (still holding fish). I finally get it back out, now where did I put the phone? Finally find it and it if OFF (still holding fish). Finally get it on and have to sign in, but I can't see diddly because of the glare. I am now trying to set up the phone for a pic with the fish and scale. Still can't see diddly, and still holding the fish, and don't want it to die. No problem, just put the fish in the well and turn the water on (have not used it in about three years). I end up unscrewing the flow tube instead of the plug. Screw it, back to taking some kind of "Authenticated" photo. (Still holding fish). Decide to put the fish in the water for a minute to make sure it is O.K. Finally, lay the fish down by the scale and hope for the best. Meanwhile, I have drifted right up against the shore. Not a great picture of the fish, but hey the fish survived
So the day started out a normal beautiful day with... (show quote)

My BIL passed away late last night in his home after a 3 year battle with the most insidious form of cancer (pancreatic.) He’s the one person I’d never guess would contract anything, he llived an extremely healthy lifestyle. My wife Betsy and I were down at their home in
Lancaster since Monday and just recently got home. Some of you may remember my posts of some family outings on the local waters, my sister Sandy and their grandson Ryan would travel up here quite frequently, we’d fish and grab lunch or dinner at a pizza/ Italian restaurant and simply just enjoy each other’s company. He was my BIL but also a great friend, and I am proud and honored to have been called his friend as well. He is most deserving of some sort of tribute.
Think I’ll have to do some fishing tomorrow to sort things out.

Fork is where I caught my 10+ , but all I did was get 2 guys that were in another boat to come over and witness the weight ( 10-1) Then I released her back to her home. Many times when people give fish to the ShareLunker program , the fish die ….. My 2cents

Hello stagers,
I have a unique fishing lure that needs painting.
It's a plastic crank bait.
My question is:
Can I use Testers model paint or should I opt for a specialty designed paint sold in catalogs such as Barlows or Net Craft?
Would either one make a difference or be more environmentally safe?
Commander Bell out 👍

Are you gonna airbrush ? If so, try createx water based airbrush paint . Then , after it is very dry , put a clear coat over it . Createx makes a water based clear . Personally I dip my painted lures in KBS clear finish .it’s kinda expensive and without proper storage it will harden . KBS is not water based….. there are epoxies that are clear that will work also, but you gotta mix it…good luck …. My 2cents…
