Welcome home! I have fished Blackhawk Lake on a regular basis as I live in Boscobel. I have trout fished that stretch. Use gold bladed rooster tails or a jig called “Trout Magnets”, which can used under a float or simply reeled back with a jigging motion. Also welcome to retirement, it’s amazing.
Welcome Yyyyyguy,
I fish the Mississippi from Prairie du Chien to Desoto and the Wisconsin River around Boscobel. I haven’t gotten the boat on the water yet, but it is ready right now. I enjoy fishing for gills, crappies, perch and walleyes.
Yes, I fish out of Blackhawk landing by Desoto. I will be fishing there Friday. Ace Hardware on south side of Lacrosse will have everything you need.
Crappie action is picking up also near weed edges. I use trout magnets with a gold 1/64 jighead and white 1-1 1/2” tails.
Gills and perch are on fire near the wing dams and weed edges in 6-14 FOW. Use pieces of crawler on a jig head. Hot colors are gold, chartreuse and orange.
I played hooky, but if a pond was in front of the school I would have never went through the doors. I skipped school for fishing and hunting and still managed to pass.
Good thing I didn’t have a pond near my high school or I would not have been in class. Nice gill!
For Grant County, WI, I recommend Crooked Creek south of Boscobel, the Big Green River and Little Green near Woodman. For Crawford County, I would wet your line in Richland Creek just north of Boscobel. These are all self producing brown trout streams.
Thanks to all the replies. I’m very proud of him. This was his second Tom. His first bird was 27.5 pounds, 10.5 inch beard and 1.25 inch spurs. He has also harvested 3 Bucks and 4 does in his short career. He got his first buck at age 8. As parents, grandparents and guardians, we need to teach our youth that there is more to having fun than TV, computers and cell phones. Take a kid to the great outdoors.
Boscobel, right on the Wisconsin River.
My 10 year grandson got this 25.5 pound, 9.5 inch beard with 1.25 inch spurs. Now he tells grandpa that he is ready for fishing crappies. I couldn’t have a better little buddy!!
ToddW,
Try fishing the mud flats in 10-16 FOW or your best place is where there is ice houses/shanties and fish just outside of there community. Perch, walleyes and white bass are normally seeking forage and constantly on the move.
Fishy man,
I would try Lake Redstone in Sauk County, or Petenwell and Castle Rock just to your north. They are good waters to fish for crappies, gills and walleyes.
Spring Lake on County Rd E southeast of Hayward. From Hayward, take County B east for 5 miles then right on County E. This will take you right by the lake. It’s about 20 minutes from Hayward. Has great crappie, blue gill and northern pike fishing. I have ice fished it many times and have had good luck. 15-20 FOW at the deepest.
Welcome aboard! My son lived in Marinette and Oconto. I love fishing the Menominee and Peshtigo Rivers. I manage to get up for ice fishing too on some of the lakes.
I fish the Wisconsin River nearly daily and the Mississippi occasionally. I fish mainly crappies and walleyes.
