Hi all! I was wondering if any of you guys/gals Have ever fished for salmon or steelhead on the south shore of Lake Superior in Wisconsin. My wife and I are going there in October and I was wondering if anybody had information on the area. I’ve done a lot of reading on the Bois Brule river. It sounds like a great fishery but I’m curious if it will be overwhelmed with people. Also, I was curious about any other rivers in the area that might be good to fish. As I said, I’ve done some reading about the south shore tributes but advice from someone who’s been there would be great! Oh yeah, I guess should’ve said that I have never fished salmon fish before😬. I was planning on bringing an 8wt. Would that be heavy enough? Thanks everyone!

OJ's right, they're delicious! They get a bad rap b/c of all the bones (and slime). There's quite a few YT tutorials on properly fileting them though. In full disclosure, I've never actually fileted one, have only eaten it.

It is not difficult. You’ll end up with 5 fillets and there no different than Walleye. Flaky white meat!

Awesome Bric! I know nothing about the mountains but I hearing that wind is an issue…. Should I make reservations at a campground or can we wing it?? We’re probably going to move around a bit? Lastly, do I need to bring some protection from bears? Spray/gun?? Better safe than sorry

The Wife and I are headed out west this coming June, and I have no idea where to fish and camp in such a huge place. We’re targeting anything that swims, but I would love to do some fly fishing. Are kayaks worth bringing? Are there fly shops in the park? We’re doing this primitive and cheep, so I would like to stay away from hiring a guide. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Hey all! I have a question pertaining to euro nymphing vs. indicator nymphing vs. what I do. I listen to a podcast yesterday talking about indicator fishing with nymphs. I gathered from the podcast that nymph fishing is typically done with an indicator attached to your leader. The reason why I haven’t ever added an indicator is that I feel the casting is a little more challenging, and I worry that my flies are not getting down deep enough to the fish. I generally Fish in the Upper Iowa river (for those that have been around Decorah, ia) and depth can be hard to figure. I have had a lot of success fishing without an indicator, but as I said, the podcast I listened to made it see unusual to fish without one. I know virtually nothing about euro nymphing other than they use long leaders and no indicator (please correct me if I’m wrong). I typically nymph fish with a 4 weight, 9 ft leader, 5ft of tipit to the first fly, and about 18” to the second fly. Fly sizes are generally #12 to 14 BH. My question is- is my style odd? Is this more of a euro nymph in style with a short leader? Again, after listening yesterday I feel that I might be missing out on a better style of fishing. Don’t get me wrong, what I’m doing is working but I’m just looking for someone to clarify. I guess I could’ve shortened the question up by asking what is euro nymphing, and why is indicator fishing so great?? Lol. Any and all thoughts are appreciated! Tight lines!!

I’m 43 and started fly fishing last year. I’m sure fly guy is giving lots of great info, but I have to say that learning to fly fish has been one of the most difficult and gratifying things I’ve ever done. Some may disagree with this but start in a river with some room to work. Develop your casting and catch some fish. Build some confidence before you start working smaller streams (if that’s your goal) and enjoy! Nothing is more peaceful!!!
