Hi

Can anyone help me out in how to catch whitefish in early spring open water fishing? I have never caught one & will be boat fishing West Grand Lake next spring which is supposed to have them in abundance.

The name is Willie. I do mostly freshwater bass fishing but I'm considering wet slipping a boat in the penobscot River in the town of Hampden. The marina is called Hamlin's.
Is anyone familiar with this Marina and if they're good to deal with? Also what's the fishing like above and below them on the penobscot River?

It's a double wide concrete landing, publicly owned with a large parking area. You don't have anyone to deal with
.
I'm not sure of the fishing other than striper schoolies in the summer. I think most bass fishing is done upstream of the Bangor dam.

There are a couple landings (gravel) going up through Milford on Route 2.

I have been skunked the last 3 of 4 trips there
That being said the scenery is beautiful.

The lake is heavily fished and relatively lightly stocked for the size. My last trip there we marking many fish in the 70 foot range but couldn't get any bites. Trolling the shoreline had no luck either but other boats had luck at the mouth of the moose river for salmon.

I would expect in June the salmon will be down 10-20 feet deep give or take 10 feet.

Good luck and maybe you'll get one of those 5 pound brookies that come out of there.

The lake has such an uneven bottom I haven't dared to use the downriggers. You can be trolling along in the middle of the lake 90' deep and suddenly see bottom over the side.

We haven't caught anything below 20' anyway so sticking with lead core and top lines.

Togue are still shallow. I caught her at 20 feet using 4 colors of lead core using a large 3" Northeast Troller spoon with luminescent tape. Most Togue are running 20 to 22 inches and are hitting at 10 feet deep. There is a slot limit of 23-33 inches so my big one was only 1 1/4 inches over that. ;-)

No sign of baitballs and few fish marked above 45-65 feet. However the 3 lost fish were all hooked between Kineo and Farm Island in 35 feet of water running 2-4 colors of lead core.

I was up to Moosehead a week ago. Water temp Moose river side of Kineo was 44 degrees and the back side was 48. We didn't catch anything but lost 3, one of which took it down to the backing before it got off the hook.
