I would suggest circle hooks will help a lot if you use bait.

Any ideas about bait or lures for very cold water spincasting in December?

Need to know what you plan to fish for.
Also cast up stream helps give sink time.
I agree nip the leader. The old man
Unless fishing a rip tide I use a slip float with a stop knot to hold my offering off bottom thus no snags unless allowing it to swing to close to shore before reeling in to re cast. The old man.
Sometimes you get to many answers. The old man.
Sometimes even with a swivel a spinner will twist your line. I take my needle nose pliers clamp over the eye of the spinner and bend it partway down and no more line twist. The old man.
I agree with those that say cut and leave the hook the fish will survive. The old man.
I raise my rod tip and hold a gentle pull if the line doesn't move I do not jerk if my line is moving I set the hook. The old man.
Check your diet if it doesn't walk, fly, swim, or grow in a garden don't put it in your mouth. Go on the internet go to drjockers.com sign up for his site. I am fly fishing at age 89 and have a hard time tying an flies I wish I had this information when I was your age or younger. The old man.
I think you are pushing the weather envelope a little try again soon during the dark of the moon I think you will find a change. Remember that light of the moon and cold fronts turn fish off the bite. The Old Man.
Check the water temperature sometimes we get to anxious because the weather is so good. I fished a reservoir today because the weather was so good and I usually catch my limit but I only caught one hold over 16". Stopped at a bait shop for a chat and was told which I should have checked the water is still to cold.
Visit your local or closest fly shop.
Check with a local fly shop you won't go wrong.
