Does does anyone know of a tool that can reach down into the throat of a bass and cut off the barb of a hook that in its gut so it can be removed without hurting the fish?

Do not try and remove the hook. The fish will pass the hook on it's on. If you try and cut or remove the hook you will do more damage than help and will probably kill the fish.

I've heard different versions of remove/don't remove. Leaving the hook can interfere with feeding and of course tearing anything can also cause damage. It's a dilemma. A couple of my thoughts …
1. trying using quickness to hook set rather than strength. I catch most of my Largemouths by flicking my wrist and not the big shoulder heaves. By being quick my thinking is that you'll get more mouth and lip hook sets. Keep as much slack out of your line as possible. If a hit, slowly and gently take in all of the slack and then flick away.
2. if the fish is throated, trying going through the gills and if necessary snip away as much of the hook as possible. The less you leave, the better the chance of survival.

There are commercial fish hook removers that are very effective 90 % of the time. You just have to use a little common sense when they are not the answer for a gut hooked fish, then cut the leader and release the fish. Look in your local tackle stores or online: Bass Pro for one.

If you check some of the state laws and saltwater NOAA regulations, you will see circle hooks are required for many species and many sites.

Circle hooks require no hook set and will (miraculously) 90 % + hook the fish in the corner of the mouth allowing easy removal and release where required or desired.

Circle hooks are about all I use except with jigs. I would use them with jigs, but I don't know of a manufacturer that makes jigs with a circle hook.

I agree with those that say cut and leave the hook the fish will survive. The old man.

I would leave the hook in if it wasn't attached to a lure or a jig head. It would be kind of tough to leave a crankbait in the throat of a bass. I was thinking more of some kind of a needle-nose plier with a cutter on the tip of it.

Barbless circle hooks would help solve the problem.

Might look up "Easy Fish Hook Remover". There are several on sites such as Amazon and they are not expensive. I usually cut the line, but I do have this type of hook remover and it seems to work okay...
