I used to catch stripers on Lake Mojave 40+ years ago.
I guess Vegas has caught up to lake and now you are finding strippers!
In the canyons just south of the dam might provide some solitude for you and the Strippers!
Have fun!😉
How is Lake Mojave these days? Back in ‘79, I worked the summer at Cottonwood Cove.
I worked long days that summer, but found time to fish after dark.
Caught mainly cats. However did catch a few very nice largemouths working the cove points.
These days I fish Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia!
My parents lived in Punta Gorda before Charlie came through. They loved the area. Dad was Commodore of CHYC. Lots of boating and lots of fishing!
Your guess is good as mine, but I would be looking off of points in about 20 - 30 feet of water. Probably a 1/4 oz white jig with pearl white tail or shaky head
Where in NJ?
I grew up on the Navesink and Shrewsbury Rivers, living in Fair Haven!
This is why Smith Mountain Lake is “My Happy Place”!
Beautiful sunsets!
Fishing with a friend on the lake! The first fish he has caught on SML is a striper. It was about 27 inches and nearly 10lbs!
The past week, striper fishing has been excellent.
On Saturday, I worked a school of stripers in the back of a cove for 45 minutes around 9:00am. Never have I had to compete with ospreys like I did that morning. Gulls were diving for the small bait while ospreys were successfully going after larger bait and bass.
I landed and released a 16 inch schoolie and a 25 inch striper. Lost one, while trying to net it, next to the boat that was well in excess of 30 inches. Two others broke off during fight.
It was a good morning on the water.
At dark, the stripers were thick in the area of the State Park. Not sure exactly where, as I got this from an SML fishing buddy.
I suspect the striper fishing on SML will become much more challenging as more “winter-like” weather may finally be coming to Virginia.
Look into the Smith Mountain Striper Club. They meet about 8x a year.
You will find both men and women I. This club who are good fishing people and will share tips with you.
The club is also one of the main stewards of this fishery working along side DWR.
Fishing from boat-chase the schools early and later part of day. Penhook Blackwater are delivering. Around Halesford there has been success.
At night go to light
All I use is artificial. Over near Halesford Bridge is Captain's Quarters. Go talk to Dwayne. He will square you away.
Other choice is to get a guide
I haven't figured it out. I have just been lucky as of late. However, I would rather be lucky than smart any day!
Labor Day has past. The lake is quiet of boat traffic and the fishing is picking up!
Between yesterday and today, I caught and released over 15 bass - large mouth, small mouth and stripers.
What made this even more fun was everyone of them was caught on top water! It’s exciting to watch a bass break the surface as it attacks your lure!
Additionally, a caught a double trifecta today. 2 of each of the above bass in one fishing outing.
From Memorial Day to Labor Day, the lake gets crazy! It is one of the reasons SML is considered the most dangerous lake in Virginia.
From Labor Day to Memorial Day, you have your own private lake.
This morning I caught a double trifecta! A first! 2 small mouths, 2 large mouths and 2 stripers. All released safely.
Also had the great fortune of watching osprey and bald eagles fish!
This morning the lake was very active.
I landed 8 fish, both small mouth and large mouth. Lost an equal amount in my 3 hours this morning.
Lots of fun and very relaxing
