No matter what you use,tie a leader.
6 in. Berkley nylon coated Black. Tie on just like you would the hook or bait. Attach the hook ot lure to the leader. Good luck.
Here in West Virginia I catch most of the trout on orange power bait. Then nightcrawlers, pin minnow yellow rooster tail pink eggs.

Simple to me. If you want,keep them. If you dont then release them. Do what you want. To many people push their opinions on other people!!

Bluegills, Gizzard shad, live and cut bait. Fishing should get better when water cools down. I live near Charleston W.V.
Try using lubricant like WD40 two people. Careful. Or leave it.

Thanks palumbob. My wife got me kayaking! Lol. I like boats more. But we both like to fish. Broke the ice the other day. Caught 3 large mouth. All keepers. But I release all my fish. Except trout of course. Keep just enough to eat.
Trout fishing in W.V. we split up. Dont talk till back at the truck. It's like fishing alone. Lol. Alot of trips I'm by myself. Love it all!
