I fish early ice mainly for trout. I start at Henry's lake, Idaho. It usually freezes by mid November. Sometimes late October. I will fish on 2" , but stay shallow and keep spred out, away from others. I have a 8" and 6" Nils. I love the 6" with a 1/2" drill. But I do like those 8" Ion's. I can't stand the sound of a power auger, and I know they scare the fish in shallow water. When I first got my 8" Nils hand auger, I used to bet anyone with a power auger that I could beat them through the ice. I also use a spud when walking on to ice.
I love fishing with red and white bobbers. Most of my catfish are caught in under 4 feet of water with them. And most in just two foot. And just just like DC said. I always go red up for the same reason. It seems to me they would be harder to see from the bottom. But when the bobber settles white side up, I know it is tangled.
There is trout, Sm Bass and crappie at East Canyon. Not sure about Kokanee.
I heard there is a ice fishing tournament at EC. Spirit, I fish for kokes through the ice. You are right, that would work. I like a Macks Sling Blade dodger and 14 inches of leader then a pink Rat Finky. Tipped with corn.
Hi momma. I'm from Roy, UT. But it's been many years since I've fished EC.
You don't have to spend a lot. Garmin makes a $100 ice finder that works. But if you can afford it, the Livescope models, are so cool. You can see your jig in the middle of the screen and see fish come from each direction. But they are $2000 and up.

Do you have a sonar unit of some kind? If not you have to get one.
Hi qorlis, welcome. Good to see you will be active on here. I'm from Utah, I retired from Hill AFB and moved up here to Idaho. If you ice fish you will enjoy it there. All the lakes are froze now. I herd Porcupine is hot right now.
I'm from Utah, and never heard of Gooseberry.
Quail Creek is more of a bass lake. Try Panguitch reservoir and the creeks that empty into it for trout.
Welcome to the site Jtesta. I want to ice fish Canyon Ferry. I'll be watching your reports.

I use a spud to check thickness if it goes though on a short punch back up slowly.
I love first ice. And go out checking with my spud bar first. I will fish in shallow water on 2 inches. But without most my gear and sled. 2 inches takes two good thrusts with my spud. If it takes three or four thrusts it is usually safe and I walk out further checking every 10 feet or so. I don't feel safe unless there is 3" or more. The spud bar or ice chisel has the inches marked on it. You poke it through the ice then pull it up and hook the bottom of the ice, and the exact inches show on the bar.
I do wear a floating ice coat, but sure hope I never have to try it out.
Welcome to the site RLittle. Do you and your dad ice fish? I live in Wappello.
