I want to try ice fishing since we now have had 2 weeks of well below freezing temps. Anyone have a good suggestion for getting hole in the ice if you don’t own an Auger? I was thinking about trying my cordless drill and making a perforated hole that I could knock out with a small hammer. Has anyone ever tried this or have a budget suggestion. Not looking to spend a ton on gear until I know if I really want to do it?

Can rent one. Bunch of batteries and augers for flower bulbs maybe. Sharpen the edge. Several holes then break them.

Make sure the ice is thick enough. It’s your life we’re talking about.

I’m pretty cautious only going to try shallow lake that freezes quickly without moving water. Planning to start by punching 1 in holes and measuring thickness every few feet until I get to where I feel there might be fish. Is 5 inches a safe thickness? If I remember I think we wanted at least 4 inches for ice skating as a kid.

I remember many saying they want a foot but I am not sure I really look forward to it but someone or research should get you the information your after

At 4” the ice is suitable for ice fishing, cross-country skiing and walking and can support about 200 pounds. At 5 inches of new clear ice should be enough to hold a single snowmobile or ATV or about 800 pounds. At 8-12 inches the ice should be suitable for a small car or a larger group of people.

Don't know nothing about ice fishing. But I'm not bashful. Spot someone on the ice with an auger and offer a few bucks to drill you a hole.

Chain saw. Cut yourself a square. 5 inches will hold you but I like 6 or more. There’s 6” on the east bay of Erie now so I’d imagine the inland lake your going to try will have even thicker ice. Be careful.

Oj’s idea about borrowing a auger would work also as long as sine one else is out there. Ice guys are usually pretty helpful to one another unless the lake is packed.

Where are you planning to go? What are you targeting?

Small lake near home for blue gill and Crappie. If I get adventurous and figure things out might drive up to McKarnes trying to catch a pike. I know they have them there along with Crappie and blur gill.

Ice spuds are about $40
Hand augers are about $50
Be prepared to drill or spud more holes so you can chase the fish back to where you started 😉
A 5’ chunk of 1” rebar would work or like Gordon suggested offer a few bucks to the next guy with an auger to punch a couple for you, too.

Yep Doug Lemon his too.

You had a doppelgänger as well but I can’t remember his name. He looked like you. I’m going to have to figure it out or it will drive me nuts!

These guys are all in same pose with similar sized fish.

Right. I have read a post. Looked at the picture. Sometimes do not have glasses on too. But then I see it’s the other guy but they are all good guys in my opinion. I would love to do a lot of the fishing and other Hunter gatherer things some of the members in other places go do for sure.

Ya, I plan to fish in the spring with some of the guys in PA. Can’t wait to get out west at Summers end.
