This is off topic, but related to a post a few days ago where you mentioned Gainesville, TX, Bomber Bait, and being a partner in North Texas Marine. We lived in N. Texas for 40 years, 19 of those on a ranch northwest of Whitesboro. Also very familiar with Muenster, St. Joe, etc. Two of my boys worked for Joe Wallace at North Texas Marine for several years. They said they would guess your partner was Joe’s dad, Dick Wallace. Also one of the boys has an original Bomber Bait still in the original packaging. Don’t know where you are in Houston, but know Tiki Island and go by there many many times.

Yes they are a weird looking fish. One day fishing Moses Lake (near Dickinson Bayou-Dickinson, TX, seems like that was all we could catch. Every cast. They are wiry little dudes and put up a surprising good fight. Don’t know if you can eat them.

Hey Jonmaly, crystalbeachbum here. Sir, I too would love to have someone to fish with. I would also like to go out on the party boat with you. However, right now here is the situation. I have spent the last year dealing with lung cancer. Also we travel a good deal in our motor home. Because of this monster that attacked my body and not be able
to do anything, I am behind on everything. Currently waxing & polishing the coach and taking care
of some service & maintenance issues getting ready to leave Crystal Beach on 1/1. We are going to spend a week in Rockport visiting friends and fishing. Then headed on down the coast to Riviera on Baffin Bay where we will spend the rest of Jan. and Feb. kickin back and fishing. Where did you catch the specks? Let’s stay in touch and one day we can get together. I am only a 20 minute ferry ride away from Galveston. Good luck

MJ3 welcome to the forum. I know exactly where you are talking about. Have friends that live in Bridge City & Port Neches. I cain’t help you much though cause we live in Crystal Beach on the Bolivar Pennisula. I have fished Sabine Lake on a charter and caught a good mess of reds. Anywhere around Sabine Lake, jettys, piers. Do you have a boat? Take a charter out of Port Arthur if you can. As you become more familiar with the area look for people fishing and talk to them and you will find most people will be glad to share what they know. There are several good places over here in Crystal Beach, but it’s about 70 mile or so from where you are. Good luck to you

i Have a 55# thrust trolling motor on my Sea Eagle 10’ inflatable hooked up to a big AGM deep cycle battery. The pix you see was in Eagle Nest Lake near Angel Fire, NM. Putted all over that lake for several hours with still plenty of battery left. I also have a portable solar charger I can use that lies on top of the battery to keep it charged if necessary.

If I could offer a suggestion. This may sound crazy, but I’m sure I’m not the only one who has ever fished this way. Last summer (late July) on the Kenai River in Alaska. The sockeyes were running upstream to spawn. And no, they will not hit anything. We were staying with a friend who lives there and has fished the Kenai for years.
Using a 9’ fly rod & reel. Tied on the hook was a short piece of brightly colored heavy string (kinda like a pipe cleaner, pink, red, lime green as I recall). A short distance above a small split shot.
Pull out enough line to reach from the rod tip to the reel. Flip the line out on the river at 10:00 o’clock and let it drift with the current to about 4:00 o’clock. This we did repeatedly. The fish do not strike or bite, but merely swim into the hook or line. When then run into the line or the hook, they will fling their head kinda like a strike, but really more of an annoyance. As I said, this sounds crazy, but with all the fish swimming upstream, it works. I caught 8 sockeye. They have to be hooked in the mouth. Anywhere else is considered snagged and is unlawful, and they have to be released. Don’t know if this will work for you, but sure did for us. And let me tell you, when you set the hook, hang on brother cause the fight is on. Good luck.

To fly guy. We are currently planning on spending Jan. & Feb. in south Texas. Our first time to do that. Would appreciate any info you could provide for fishing along the S. Texas coast and/or maybe we could even meet up one day and swap lies over a cup of joe.

Eaten lots of reds & specks. Never saw any worms. Have also eaten lots of blacks, however not the really big ones. For blacks we filet them, cut in chunks, and deep fry like catfish. Corn meal, some Tony’s for a little kick, maybe a little garlic powder. Excellent. Reds of course, in my opinion is best on the half shell. Man, gettin hungry talkin about it

I apologize for my “redneck” spelling. But juz cause ya don’t know how to spell it, don’t mean ya don’t know how to catch em. And if I was smart enough to figure out how to get a pix from my fone to this here email, I would show you some Texas “hogs”. But then everything is bigger in Texas, so y’all probably wouldn’t be surprised. Y’all have a great day.

Lake Ray Roberts, north of Denton is an awesome bass (and crappie) lake. Lake Texoma, bass, crappie, cats, and HUGE strippers.

Good morning. I assume that is you in the pix and a nice mess of fish also. Tomorrow is not a good time. We do spend some time on the mainland where one of our sons lives in League City and some of my doctors are located also. Don’t know where you live, but that may be a possibility of meeting over there. Of course here at the beach would be great, but not real good beach weather right now. We can stay in touch and work something out. Good luck on your trip tomorrow
