are we talking pinchot lake in york county, pa?
a quick, easy, and clean bait for channel cats is frozen shrimp (thawed of course) just thread on hook, shell and all
i always keep a texas rigged worm handy. if the bass misses follow with the worm, otherwise hodor187, and fnt give good advice

man goes to a bar
asks the bartender if he wants to hear a good blond joke
bartender says,
see that guy over there, he's the Russian heavyweight boxing champ, and he's blond,
that girl there, the world champion female wrestler of the world, and she's blond,
and i have a baseball bat right in front of me under the bar, and i'm blond,
are you sure you want to tell a blond joke?
the man says, well no, not if i have to explain it three times!
i have luck cranking this time of year, i like to have a little orange on my baits in the fall. RJS is right on with plastic worms, and sometimes a rattle trap works in the fall too
i have had that happen before. its the reel, time for an upgrade. less expensive reels have a gap between the spool, and case that the line slips into. heavy mono, or floro will work better, but you will still have it happen
picture #3 is a nice one, love them smallies!
im with you madmac...hang in there
if your in big water with big boats make sure your gear is secure. nothing worse than getting swamped, and loosing gear. like bapabear said practice getting bak aboard!
no mention of smallmouth? hook a 4-5 pounder, and hope you brought a lunch!
