Pound for pound, bowfin should be a pretty good contender. Very underrated for how available they are. Located generally up and down the mid to east usa

Yeah I fought a 8 pounder bow once for about 15-20 minutes, and I swore that thing was a musky the whole time, as I was fishing in musky waters. Finally got it up to shore and I was pissed ha. Some people still kill them I know, but he was a thrill so I let him go. They hit anything it seems, we've gotten a few.

Hard to beat a king salmon, especially in heavy current.

A guppy would be a contender in enough current!

Go ultralite and go after some of those 1-2 lb bluegill and sunfish. Lb for lb they are hard to beat.

I agree that the Bluegill and Sunfish are pound for pound the toughest anywhere. But the Redfin Pickerel, may reign supreme in a pound for pound fight on Ultralight tackle. I'm a musky guy myself, but I wouldn't think the fight of a typical musky is tougher than a King Salmon. Great question and one that everyone has an opinion on, I'm sure.
What about White Bass? For it's size, is there anything harder to fight?

When the white bass are running and on the feed they are great gun to catch. Strong fighters and their initial hit about tears the rod from your hand. When I lived in Wi I used to have a few people that came up for the white bass run every spring. The best part is they are very good eating. I usually just take the back fillet down to the mud line and that makes some great eating.

We often are able to fish a lake in Canada in May within the first 10 days after ice out. The lake trout we catch are in the 7 to 9 lb range and are up in the top 10 feet of the surface. They readily hit a minnow type lure like a Rapala Husky Jerk casting or trolling. They just never stop fighting, going around and around rolling over your line and fighting even after being in the net. Conversely, when they are caught 30 to 70 feet deep, they put up fight at first, but give up quickly and sometimes come in like a boot.
