Just wondering what river your trying. I'm a real rookie when it comes to river fishing. I don't even know if fishing is legal in this river here at Granite Falls. Also is it a single hook only?

Depends on what part of the river your referring to,south fork Stilly or the Pilchuck,as far as gear is concerned, single barbless hook is a good rule of thumb on any river around Puget Sound. If your here in Granite Falls you could private mssg me,I live here and always look forward to meeting fellow stagers plus its way easier to pass on local knowledge in person.

Y'all kill me. I fished in Alaska beating ice for hours before hauling a single pot.
I've sewn web in the ice storms bare handed as required on the draggers.
If I wanna fish pinks in the summer, so be it land lover..
I've paid my dues son.
I've only recently learned to fish one at a time..
Kokanee is my favorite...
Y'all enjoy the holidays and keep a tight line..

The post referring to pinks wasn't aimed at you,it was for the nancy who doesn't like lure tree's for Christmas and though I do love land,I run a small skiff out on Puget sound for salmon and am also familiar with hauling pots on the Bering Sea in the winter so have a nice day as well

Thank God we aren't boating or fishing with all u guys. Or we'd be couch surfing until u all got rid of trees in ur living room. Pathetic bunch lmfao😜
Let me guess u buy all the new gear just to brag u have it but never use it.. Fish don't eat new. Gear btw. Lol 😂

Who's pathetic, your probably one of those nancies that only fishes in the summer for pinks because the weather is nice and the fish are easy so even you can catch em.

A couple of comments...

1. The weight is optional if you have a fast/soft rod. If you choose to use one, use a wire-tie to attach it close to the butt of the rod to prevent it from swinging around when you have a fish on.

2. To increase swing when your bait is picked up, point the rod slightly sideways to the direction of your line and adjust the position of the snap to hold it there. This will also help reduce wind-swing.

3. The adjustable (2'-4') lanyard needs roughly 5' of cord.

Brave? I say " Stupid is as stupid does."
You intentionally shut a car door on a rod you DESERVE whatever happens.

I'd laugh like he77 if I ever saw someone actually try that test, the only testing I do personally is while catching,my best test was an 18 lb Chinook salmon using a 10'-6" 4-6# line wght Shimano Convergence with 6# line, needless to say the reel drag was set light.

An added comment for those up here in Washington, the spoons, spinners and twitching jigs have all worked for salmon in the rivers,Acehigh hoochie skirts out on Puget Sound, slip boobers and small Aerojigs(mostly red)are my go to for steelhead, the only ones I haven't caught with are the bass plugs(haven't targeted bass yet) and the winged spin-glo's but they sure look nice on the tree.

Be a pretty brave man to intentionally use the car door test,I've lost a couple Shimano's that way.My money's on the car door.

Then get your backside out to the lakes and open your frontside and ask some questions.Funny when some people ask for help then complain when its given, my advice is go out and do your own research.

I was severely outgunned given the kind of fish we encountered (the kind of fish that swallaws the fish that swallaws your bait). And the braid eventually broke, once I tightened the drag past the braid's rated strength. But the rod held up better than I expected it would.

On a somewhat related note, what kind of strong and short rod would be appropriate for inshore fishing for fish that can fight?

I don't need a long rod, since there is no casting. We fish directly under the boat. And setting the hook (or responsiveness) isn't the primary concern, so the rod's action can be somewhat slow, if that helps prevent breaking, and as long as it has sufficient power. What's a decent and not too expensive rod for such purposes?

Do they make 5-foot rods? Or shorter?

Halibut or Tuna rods would probably suit you,the nice ones even have roller bearings in the guides to reduce friction on heavy fish.

Funny you should say that...as I had the same thought about having to "de-tangle" them in the wild! I don't like losing lures, so I have been known to become involved in some pretty radical stunts to retrieve them!

I've brought one of those extendable pole pruners out to the river a couple times, not to retrieve my own but to collect others, gotten some pretty good scores that way.

That is a great tree! Fishing lures will look mighty fine hanging from those branches! Have a Merry Christmas season as well! I just wrapped up helping my wife decorate our home, with the final touch being to change out music CD's in our stereo and replacing them with Christmas themes.

I'd much rather see my lures hanging on the Christmas Tree than on a tree next to the river,LOL
