But seriously, I don't know about using doughballs for catfish. Carp love em, but they are not catfish. Cats feed by smell, so oily stuff like chicken livers re good.

What kind of dough?

Dirty singles or fives. Using larger bills is just throwing your money away.

Stop at a local bait shop and pick their brains. They can tell you where, when, and with what. They obviously want you to buy things, but if you can't catch fish you won't be a regular customer, so they want you to succeed. Even the guys at Bass Proshops are helpful if they aren't too busy, and if they are, chat with the customers waiting on line. Fishermen generally love to talk about fishing.

Can I replace standard treble hooks on rapalas and similar lures and spinners like mepps with weedless single hooks of the proper size? Is this a stupid idea?

Wish I had caught a shark at 8!!

Check local Craigslist for guides - both shore and boat trips are sometimes advertised there. Check with local baitshops. They want you happy and coming back, and there are no "secret fishing holes" in the gulf, so you'll get good advice. Shore fishing can be combined with a day at the beach, and if you are trying for shark, it's bait fishing at its laziest. Bring spinning gear along tokeep him busy. Just time the tides. Bring along a kite, just for fun.

We have lunker bass fishing here too. Ask at the baitshops for the best:spots.

Check the local red tide reports online. Blooms are usually localized, but can ruin a day at the beach with stinging eyes and respiratory information. And there's always the lakes. Have a hell of a good time!

Two kinds of canals in the Cape, fresh and salt (actually brakish). The City has a map somewhere on their website. The freshwater canals are not connected to the river or the bay. Bass fishing is OK. I've done well at the end of the canal just south of the end of Vizcaya. Nobody fishes it. Spin baits work.

The salt canals can have all sorts of stuff including snook, sheepshead, redfish, snappers, and even tarpon and shark. Like the guy above said, shrimp, but spin baits work too.

Used to run a boat livery on a 3mile long lake. A 10 hp on a 14' Jon will get up on a plane with one or two people and move along nicely. A 5 won't do it.

FL has a new law that requires shore shark fishers to move on if swimmers show up. (Also need to take an online mini ourselves and take a quiz.)

So I want to know, what is that one item in your tackle that people would genuinely ask about if you pulled it out?

Mine is a telescoping wire rod, generally used to fish line though wall. It's 6ft rod with a loop hook and optional magnet attachment that I used to snag fishing line in trees. I've had a couple chances to use it, but today I kept snagging bobbers out of trees and cleaning up hanging line. Also found someones spilled soft plastics, a broken Zebco rod and a rod handle.

Today I helped clean my local lake. Got 5 bobbers, probably a solid hundred yards of line (not all show in image). So question, what is this huge swim bait that I snagged in the water? It was attached to the thickest mono I've seen. Couldn't of been there long, rust had not yet formed on the hook.

Anyway, tell me what is that crazy tackle you have. Could be anything from a bait, special hook, non-fishing item like my hook rod, whatever I want to know!

White Jellybeans. Guess they look like frog eggs. Maybe the smell.

Moonless night, dead quiet, mirror lake. We're fishing rapallas and being as silent as possibles sliding along shoreline. Bumped my rod against the aluminum Jon boat's gunwale, and a startled beaver slapped his tail flat against the side of the boat. Both I and my cousin practically leapt over the side. Sounded like a plane crash. One of my most exciting fishing moments ever.
