So I'm in the market to upgrade my 35 year old spinning rod and reel which was a ultralight Shimano Aero reel that's making grinding noises, and a Berkley Lightening rod IM6. I'm thinking of going with a St Croix Avid X 7' medium fast action rod, and a Shimano Stradic FL.

Everything that I've read including my friend's recommendation all seem unanimously in favor of the Avid X rod, but reels seem really wide open, some like the Stradic FL, some like the Pflueger Supreme XT 30 including my friend, some like the Abu Garcia Revo SX30, and I heard that the Daiwa Tournament ss700 is very good. The odd duck is the Piscifun Carbon X Spinning Reel 1000, but I'm a bit leery of this one due to it being so cheap to buy, but if it's really well made and will last a long time I would rather save money! For some reason reels are very confusing with one person saying one is better and another saying a different one is better.

I do mostly lake fishing for panfish and bass, some river fishing, I'm not one of those fishing everyday guys, I might go once a month, maybe twice a month, sometimes from the shore and sometimes off a boat. But I want a rod that is sensitive, and a reel that will last a long time.

Appreciate any and all information.

Amazing! Your Berkley rod only lasted 35 yrs and you want to replace it! Rod lasted me that long I'd replace it with the same rod!

I was in a Dicks once. Once was enough! I just got a new ugly stick, first one I ever bought. Got it at Walmart. I suspect it will work as well as a ugly stick I bought anywhere else. I don't like spending money for the sake of spending money. got about 20 rods in the bedroom, no wife, This ugly stick is the most I ever paid for a rod and lot of these rods I've been using over 20 yrs!

I have a low profile with 4# line set up on a Ocuma Kokanee Pro rod, UL. I find I can cast 1/8oz jigs on a small single spin fairly well. Used it for small mouth bass last weekend and it did fine. I have my ABU2500 on a med action rod and have 6# test line on it. I'm starting to think that the problem with baitcaster's and light lure's is we set them up to used heavier baits then can't cast lighter baits well. I have another low profile reel on a 6'6" med action rod with 4# line and it also does well. But I also set these up with the fish I though I'd target. Crappie, bull heads and small mouth bass for the low profile's. Used my 2500 wit 6# line for cast yesterday evening but didn't connect with anything. My though is that the line weight will let me handle the average fish in that class and over that I need to think about what I'd doing to no way! I did find that for what ever reason the UL rod cast's better using a sidearm cast, no clue why! So I simply side arm cast it.

Something I found out is all the stuff on newer reels ain't all it's cracked up to be. I learned to cast on a direct drive reel. Only thing that saved you from a birds nest was your own thumb. But one small hint if you try that, in the beginning don't cast. Simply try to toss the weight your using and get used to controlling the spool with your thumb. I've had a number of reels with that little brake deal and have never figured out what to do with it! I do get my spool tension set these days and that works great, well at least I know what it does! Sometimes the casting weight goes down slowly and other times not. I still rely on my thumb a lot these days!

I hook the braid to a swivel and do use the Palomar even do the loop over the top. No trouble with it. Have a hard time joining braid to mono though. Thinking just the normal way and tie w knot in the tag on both lines?

Egg loop is easy. I think it's called a snell knot to tie a leader on a hook wit the leader wrapped around the hook shank. Best and easiest on a hook with barbs on the back. Go down just below the barb and tie that snell know, tighten it up so the barb stops the knot right there. Push the main line through the hook eye and that's your egg loop! My circle hooks don't have a barb on the shank so I tie a snell knot below the hook eye using at least 20 wraps. Cut off both ends so all that is under the hook is that knot. Then run the line in again and tie another snell knot below the first. It stops the knot on the main line from closing up and leaves you an egg loop!

I was under the impression that a conventional reel was a baitcaster without a level wind?

I'm a round reel guy too but have two low profile reels. Both on light rods, on UL, and spooled with 4# mono. The Daiwa reel is very nice and if I were to go out and get another most that would matter to me is if it looked good, felt good and wasn't to expensive. Daiwa has earned a good reputation and I would trust that. My other on is a Kastking that is the least expensive one they have. Set up like the Daiwa it's on the UL rod. Took it bass fishing last Tuesday and it did well but a few over runs. Using 1/8os jig on a small single spin. I have one other Daiwa casting reel, a Millionaire and can't say enough good about it. Yep, Daiwa earned their Reputation!

If your having trouble deciding which one, close your eye's and have someone mix them up and pick one!

I guess your talking 12 to 15 pound braid. I've just recently decided to really try braid. I can'r see a lot of difference in choosing one over the other. Might be that 12 will cast easier than 15 but no clue. In mono lighter line does cast better. Problem with braid for me is tying knot's that actually don't slip! Of course the stuff is skinny and hard for me to see well to. Put 20# on one casting rod and found it does cast better than mono. Think because it's so limp, just lays on the spool. Now I got the stuff on two more casting rods. One thing I do like with this 20# braid is it allows me to use heavier leader and still stay below the main line. Used to use 10# mono main and 6# leader.

My son used those pre rigged hooks and does pretty well. I like a bit more leader and leader lighter than my main line so make my own. also like egg loops on them in case I want to try chicken liver. And must admil I like tising up my own. Retired and bored!
