From others' comments it sounded like they thought I was there! NO, i as never anywhere but F.E. Warren AFB and before Viet Nam. If they had said "sickem" I would have been glad to jump into anything that flew. Just Sayin...RJS

So, you never had a chance to fly in any AF aircraft?

A U.S. Army chopper V/S a Soviet Mig

During our period in Vietnam there was an incident where every evening just about sundown, a Soviet Mig would come screaming into this valley held by U.S. troops and strafe the area. He always entered at the same place and also exited the opposite side. Same procedure every day!
A gunship pilot began to calculate when and what was needed to shoot that Mig down. He only had a gunship but figured if he could accurately calculate the time of arrival and speed of the Mig, he might have a chance. So, he would get his bird in the air, and wait for the Mig’s appearance.
On this round, as the Mig arrived, he fired his when he thought the Mig would be when the rockets arrived. Sure enough, he made a clean kill on the harassing ship. They recovered the Mig wreckage and there was a dead Soviet pilot aboard. He was well known in Russia and highly decorated but had made one two many strafing runs there. Just Sayin…RJS

Never heard that story, must have happened before I got there. When I was there a MIG would be committing suicide if they crossed over the borders with all the fighter aircraft we had. F4 pilots were praying they'd get a chance at a MIG. We had a MIG at Phu Cat, from a defector, but it was flown in by an AF pilot from somewhere else. Dang thing was stored in a spare revetment and had 24hr guards, was still there when I left

Sinker Rig.... I got mine in 1969. For those that don't remember, it was pumped into your butt cheek and made a lump bigger than a golf ball felt like it was almost solid, like kinda Vaseline density. USMC had a fix for the lump though, and maybe other services as well. They ordered us down on the deck, and we did 50 situps. It worked, spread out the lump to a large degree. Good ol' Marines, got a fix for everything, more PT.

Yeah, a needle the size of a framing nail and a syringe that held a pint of vaccine

Paid a guide to take us out of Tampa, we caught Snook, Redfish, and Sea Trout...kept one each of the three, the guide didn't "have a filet knife" so they were not cleaned...we took them to the Radisson restaurant to ask the chef if he could clean and cook them, we said he could keep all the fish he didn't use since they were good sized, to which he said he was looking forward to. This was a huge black guy that was at least 6'7" tall, but as nice a guy as you could ever want to meet. I had apologized about the fish not being cleaned and explained how the guide said he didn't have a filet knife, even to let me use.

He brought a huge platter out that had seven ways the fish were prepared, with a big heap of risotto in the middle. He followed the waiter out to explain how each was prepared, every table in the restaurant was watching, and asking their waiters what it was we were getting.

There was something really special about the way that guy could cook, it was one of the more memorable things we've ever done.

The notion of a guide being paid excellent money for the day not having a filet knife for out of towners is ridiculous, but then he bitched about us not leaving him a tip...he said you know, it's customary to leave your guide a tip, I said it was also customary to clean a customer's fish.

Most guides around here are C/R, they don't want anyone keeping fish, especially snook. They want to keep catching the same fish over and over with different clients and making money off a resource that belongs to all of us.............bastids. My favorite freshwater would be crappie, never had walleye but have been told it's great

Yeah, I spent 2 years overseas and we had to keep our shot records all current. We had to go bout every 6 months and get them updated with more shots as needed.
We were on world wide mobility and had to be prepared to be able to be sent anywhere in the world if needed.
From the time the alarm sounded we had to assemble with out flight bags and weapons and were sittin on the runway ready to board the plane within 30 min. Boy, talk about hustle. Heaven help you if you didn't show up.
That was like bein AWOL.

Did you get the dreaded gamma globulin shot? Was mandatory for new arrivals in Nam. Worse than a penicillin shot if you've ever had one. Shortly after I got mine the AF stopped giving them

For my Cape Coral, Ft. Myers, Sanibel friends. I was out yesterday at the large artificial reef a few miles due south of Sanibel, and WNW of Ft. Myers Beach when I came across a few hundred floating dead fish in dark, reddish water (I assume red tide). I wasn't fishing, just checking out the area. It appeared to be getting larger. I reported it to the Florida Authorities, just wanted to let this group know that it may be moving nearer shore depending on the winds and will have a bad impact on any fishing or boating plans in this area. Be careful out there, it isn't good to be breathing that stuff for too long, I left quickly after finding myself in the discolored water. Google red tide forecast before heading out (though it hasn't been updated in about a week, it didn't show the red tide I discovered). I also came across two floating pilings, but not much other debris. Be careful out there!

I’m telling on myself. Several years ago I had the opportunity to go cat fishing with a older fella that had been arrested 2 times in Oklahoma and another time in Texas for using the telephone. We rode out on Lake Procter in North Texas and took our rods and reels just for show. His telephone fit into a galvanized minnow bucket that had a hole drilled in it for the crank handle. We tossed out both leads and he began cranking on that telephone. Very soon we had two very large Yellow Cats on the top of the water. We netted one of them but the other went down after we broke one of the leads. We went straight to shore and strung that 62 lb. Catfish up, bled it out and we had a wonderful catfish dinner. We couldn’t go show it off because the fishes fins were blood red and back then most folks would know the fish was taken illegally. The old fella said only some of the old crank telephones would put out the right voltage to stun the fish. He also said the water had to be fairly clear. If it was muddy the telephone wouldn’t connect between the leads. Im proud to say I’ve seen it done😎👍

Love that story El Rod, we got a 60lb yellow one time, he came up in 3ft of water. I learned a ton about where catfish hang out, and on our river it wasn't deep water, was always in shallow fast moving water that had snags and tree limbs sticking up
