Figured I’d share a couple of the stories I found interesting and had saved. This one should start some controversy.😂 I know many stagers would never eat the last one. Do you guys agree with the ranking? I’m a Yellow Perch #1 then walleye…. I Don’t want to ruin the article.

What’s your top 5?

I am a saltwater fish person primarily but have fond memories of living on a lake near Green Bay while playing Phantom of the Opera for a month there. Cabin was heated by wood I chopped, fished and ate a lot of perch, some of which I traded a guy for vegetables he grew in his garden. He took me to Green Bay one day and we caught a 30 lb salmon [they were spawning] and a 30lb brown trout. He took them and smoked them and sent some of each to my house in NJ.
I want to know where you can get fish for $5/lb. It's $8-12 lb here.
Haddock, flounder, cod, salmon, perch. Never had walleye or crappie but I want some!!!!

I agree with you. Last year I had a fish fry for 30 friends and family. I cooked catfish, crappie, perch, walleye, and pike. Every person tried and liked all the different types. They had their favorites but good fish cooked well is GOOD!! IMO

Gills and crappies are my 2 favorites, sure won’t exclude yellow perch and walleyes but my tastebuds water for gills and crappies.

Paid a guide to take us out of Tampa, we caught Snook, Redfish, and Sea Trout...kept one each of the three, the guide didn't "have a filet knife" so they were not cleaned...we took them to the Radisson restaurant to ask the chef if he could clean and cook them, we said he could keep all the fish he didn't use since they were good sized, to which he said he was looking forward to. This was a huge black guy that was at least 6'7" tall, but as nice a guy as you could ever want to meet. I had apologized about the fish not being cleaned and explained how the guide said he didn't have a filet knife, even to let me use.

He brought a huge platter out that had seven ways the fish were prepared, with a big heap of risotto in the middle. He followed the waiter out to explain how each was prepared, every table in the restaurant was watching, and asking their waiters what it was we were getting.

There was something really special about the way that guy could cook, it was one of the more memorable things we've ever done.

The notion of a guide being paid excellent money for the day not having a filet knife for out of towners is ridiculous, but then he bitched about us not leaving him a tip...he said you know, it's customary to leave your guide a tip, I said it was also customary to clean a customer's fish.

J, I would have to rank them as follows:
Crappies
Walleyes 17-21”
Bluegills
Yellow Perch
Northern Pike
I have had some great bass out of clean water and some good Catfish, but have never targeted, nor cleaned and prepared my own.

I can not tell the difference between small walleye and yellow perch when breaded. That is the only way I have had walleye. They are both on top. Next would have to be crappie and bluegill. Again, both are so similar it would be tough to judge. I like crappie better, not for the taste, but ease and size of filets. My experience with cats is so long ago (limited availability hear) that I can not give them a fair rating except very good. The following are all very good, but I could only rate if eaten together, large and small mouth bass, pike, white bass, lake white fish and burbot. Sorry if I overlooked anything.

I believe it was stated $5 a fork full, not a pound

Most guides around here are C/R, they don't want anyone keeping fish, especially snook. They want to keep catching the same fish over and over with different clients and making money off a resource that belongs to all of us.............bastids. My favorite freshwater would be crappie, never had walleye but have been told it's great
