Needing your recommendations on fishing filet knives.
I currently have the standard Rapella fixed blade knife, but it requires frequent sharpening.
Wondering if I should switch to electric, battery powered or hydro powered knives.
Maybe it's best to keep what I have?
Last year I caught mostly Pan fish. This year I'm branching out to Catfish, Walleye and Northern Pike. Maybe Gar, if I can secure a bow with real or preferably a fishing cross bow.
Please add your advice on Gar Fishing, and it's equipment as well. I want to give it a whirl.
Thanks for your input

I was gifted a rapala electric. I liked how it worked but didn’t use it very much as I’m mostly a CPR guy. Came with two rechargeable batteries and a charger. Within 3 years neither battery would charge.

Fished it a few times. The sandbars continuously move so maps are not very accurate. The river channel is fairly consistent. There is more depth at the west end near prairie du sac.

I’d stick to neutral colors as there will be hand me downs. Lil Raccon’s choice of pink might not sit well with tiger. I bought blue vests for my kids and now the grandkids are wearing them. A few also got passed among some cousins. Seem to remember I spent plenty for them and they’ve worn well.

Merry Christmas. If you like the feel of a Canada style lake I’d recommend Lake Vermilion in northern Minnesota. Huge lake, hundreds of islands, wilderness feel, lots of resorts for places to stay.

Depending on the age and proximity of the grandkids you might want to consider a boat that can pull a tube or water skier. My 17’ StarCraft works pretty well for fishing and play but is a bit crowded with 3 or more fishers.

Thanks. Four brothers have five boats. All set up for different uses. This one is oldest brother who lives on the bay and only goes out in clement conditions.

I forgot to mention that if a true trophy is caught, fiberglass replicas have really been perfected. A length and girth with a couple of pictures does the trick.

It’s mostly catch and release. In many lakes there is a 50” minimum. However there is a less informed group that think musky in their lake is detrimental to their fishery and kill them when caught.

70 degrees on Green Bay. Unusual for northern Wisconsin. Caught this little guy while trolling for musky. Had one good contact but nothing to show for it.

In the fall we use 10-15 inch suckers on a quick strike rig. This allows a more favorable release.

When I bought a new boat my brother christened it Spanky as in brand spanking new. Soooo, maybe Spanking Becky?

Watch out for stumps. Fished up there for a week last Sept. Saw no musky. Small mouth and skillet sized crappie.
