I bought a small boat off of craigslist. I have a trolling motor on it because I like to fly fish and cast for bass. I live in San Diego. Some of the lakes don't allow gas motors. The motor that was on this boat is a propane outboard motor. Pushes the boat good to get me across the lake and back.

What flies do you use that will catch fish every single time regardless of the conditions?

If you use poppers for panfish. I like to use a chartreuse color. My favorite has a lie blue hackle. My 84 year old Dad and I have caught a lot on that flie.

Guess I am getting to old. ;) He didn't say anything about the old Jitterbug. Worked good as a top lure and with 3-4 split shot a foot above the lure, works under water with a slow retrieve.

I laughed when I saw jitterbug. About 20 years ago I was bass fishing with my brother in law. I was using a lite rapala lure F7. My Dad gave me an old musky jitterbug and told me to throw it right before dark. It was a big heavy lure. I had been throwing the lite lure all day so the first cast with the heavy jitterbug I didn't adjust and preceded to throw it about 10 yards into the woods and hit a big oak tree. I thought my brother in law was going to fall out of the boat laughing.

I prefer fishing alone unless I am with my 84 year old Dad. We enjoy each others company. We get on the water when the sun comes up and we stay until it gets too dark to see. We have the best time talking about everything imaginable and reminiscing old trips. My Dad is awesome.

Hey guys, so me and my dad are going out to fish at our local reservoir on Monday and were gonna try our luck targetting bluegill and other panfish. We've gone out to this spot before and caught the occasional bass and chain pickerel.

Some additional info:

-The reservoir is usually pretty grassy in the summer and has a lot of deep spots to it.

-Also plenty of cover in terms of fallen trees, there is also a decently sized two way concrete bridge that goes over the water too

-The water is usually more dark and murky than it is clear. It's been raining a lot lately which I'm not sure how that will effect thinga.

-We'll be fishing from a boat and not from the shore

Appreciate any advice anyone might have

I would try fly fishing with a popper. My favorite way to catch blue gill. You don't have to spend a lot of money getting set up. They have inexpensive rods and reels at Walmart. The flies are inexpensive also. Only a couple of dollars. I have a handmade custom rod because I love it. However my Dad taught me with a simple cane pole with 6 lb. line with the fly tied on the end. The popper floats and the bluegill comes up to the top and hits it. It makes a smacking sound that will get the andrenaline flowing like a bass hitting a top water plug. Once you try it you will be hooked Hope you have a great time with your Dad. I am traveling back to Florida next week to flyfish with my 84 year old Dad. Can't wait.

Hi, I live in San Diego now but I am originally from Florida. I have been fly fishing with my 84 year old Dsad for over 50 years. We get all of our flies from a local guy. He makes them all. if you are looking for poppers, he is the best we have ever seen and the price is great. You can contact him through Facebook. The name of his business is Bea Bea bugs. His name is John but his wife Bea handles the transactions on Facebook for him. He makes them how you want them. Our favorite is a chauertruse bug with a light blue hackle.
