Just picked up a very interesting book titled "What a Fish Knows" by Jonathan Balcombe, the Director of Animal Sentience at the Humane Society Institute for Science and Policy and published by Scientific American. Have read many articles/books on fish, and their vision etc., but should be interesting to find out what else has been scientifically discovered about what "they know"....!?!?

Have only gotten a few pages read, but I shall have some time to delve into it this weekend, as we are experiencing a beautiful snow event that started yesterday and is supposed to go through the weekend. About 6"-8" on the ground now and not letting up anytime soon !
....yea !...build that snowpack to keep our reservoirs full and the rivers flowing great all summer long !

I didn't know about umami so I googled the 5 basic taste sensations. It said: The sense of taste has classically been limited to the 5 basic taste qualities: sweet, salty, sour, bitter, and umami or savory. Can I get 1/2 credit for guessing savory? I still don't get what umami tastes like.

Since I was going with savory firstly....and I have to ask ...are we not 'mericans ? We use American words for what is the topic.
To wit...Americans call the place to put suitcases in a car "a trunk", British call it "a boot".

In addition to the apparent interchange of umami vs. savory (meaning anyone who also said savory, should get full credit !), but really now....and be thoughtful and honest....who ever heard that term... "umami".... prior to the past decade ?
I have 4 Malaysian-born Chinese siblings, aunts who are excellent cooks, and many chef acquaintances....NONE of which have used that word to describe a dish, to my knowledge.

Gotta stick with "savory", rather than the hip, relatively-new term, mostly spread by cooking show hosts of today who wish to sound "savvy"......

You must have been raised by a subserviant as all.get out mother and if you had any sisters, they followed suit.
I, on the other hand, had a grandmother that taught Native American children on a a reservation in 1898 and eventually became an English professor. She bore my mother...who, while not a "professional", was a prominent woman in our town, at one time the leader of several organizations. My 3 sisters are a force to reckon with.....an entrepreneur in owning/running 3 "blood labs" in L.A., the next one speaks 5 languages and taught, and my little sister just retired from being the head Radiologist at a large hospital in the Bay Area.
I would love to put you in a room with these 3 ladies and see how that comes out when you spew your mysogeny.....even God would not be of help to you...hehehe.
You are free to think wh**ever you like, but I surmise that you are limited in your exposure to really great and driven...AND FAIR.....women. That's too bad, and I feel sorry for you, dude.

Additionally, I scoff at your stage moniker....your ability to be "thefinder" is obviously sarcasm.

We in Oregon are a bit jealous of your low pricing. I don't recall the exact figure for this year, but ~$110++/year for General Angler license, salmon/steelhead tag, two-pole add-on, two different "Watershed" (Columbia and Rogue basins)tags, and "Clean Boat" tag (included with boat registry of motorized boats of any type) even for an "un-mototorized" canoe or kayak or raft.
I will be 80 before I have 50yrs of "residence"....only 10yrs to go !...can't wait !...lol.

Dung beetles are found on all continents except Antarctica and live in farmland, forest, grassland, prairie, and desert habitats. Most dung beetles use the manure of herbivores, which do not digest their food very well. Their dung contains half-digested grass and a smelly liquid.

Actually...there initially were no dung beetles in Australia. The cattle biz took off and thrived, and years later a university study found that literally THOUSANDS of acres were being covered and depleting the grasslands due the lack of any beetles...and the very fine service they provide.
A very complicated procedure of harvesting dung beetle larvae was undertaken, with protocols to prevent accidentally ALSO infesting the Australian continent with any harmful bacteria (Dung beetles have up to 23 different microbials in their "gut"...some garnered from the adults that created them) that might have unwantedly spread. I remember an article in "Scientific American" magazine, circa 1974,5,6..?? reviewing the protocols and fascinating procedures employed to prevent the "unwanted & unnecessary" microbials in their efforts to import "down under".
My Entomology professor brought this to our attention...while we were dissecting Madagascar cockroaches (pretty much the ONLY insect capable of BEING dissected and being able to identify internal parts, like the digestive tract !) nearly 4" long !!
And flies and their maggots also provide a fine service, much like vultures and our beloved EARTHWORMS, as well.

Ain't Mother Nature grand ?

Mauwehu and Eastern Oz can get so much pleasure, it seems, by their passive-aggressive "anti-Western Oregon" b.s. (But I assume you "approve" of the other half...hehehe. Amazing what bigots can come up with to disparage others, isn't it ?)

It's okay boys...we don't care for you either. And how juvenile and uneducated does one have to be to lump an area of a state as "non-gratis" ?
Hey Oz...why do you think that I moved 40 years ago ?.....I suggest you get a copy of Thomas Frank's book "What's the Matter with Kansas ?".....you just might learn a thing ir two about your state and why they have such a rough time coming to the table, when the REAL issues arise.....just sayin'.
(BUT...I applaud the Kansas a******n v**e...there IS some hope apparently !)

As for the scofflaw i***t....'nuff said already about his shortcomings.
I smell TROLL.

A couple of words are a bit off, but yeah....that seems to be the gist of the daily struggles and turmoil of the long ago cowboy, morality-wise, and going through a strange town.

Growing up in Kansas as part of cattle-oriented family and having met a few of the helpful (but highly unlikely to be sitting in one of the pews in my Dad's church, on Sunday mornings !) cowboys that my uncles would hire to help move steers twice a year, I have no trouble imagining the internal angst most of those guys struggled with, back in "the Wild West" environs.

EL PASO by Marty Robbins

Out in the west Texas town of El Paso I fell in love with a Mexican girl.
Nighttime would fine me in Rosa's Cantina,
Music would play and Felina would whirl.
Black as the night were the eyes of Felina,
Wicked and evil while casting a spell.
My love was strong for this Mexican maiden,
I was in love, but in vain I could tell.
One night a wild young cowboy came in, wild as the west Texas wind...
Dashing and daring, a drink he was sharing,
With wicked Felina, the girl that I love.

So in anger I challenged his right for the love of this maiden;
Down went his hand for the gun that he wore.
My challenge was answered, in less than a heartbeat
The handsome young stranger lay dead on the floor.

Just for a moment I stood there in silence,
Shocked by the foul evil deed I had done.
Many thoughts ran through my mind as I stood there;
I had but one chance and that was to run.

Out through the back door of rose's I ran, out where the horses were tied
I picked a good one; he looked like he could run,
Up on his back and away I did ride.

Just as fast as I could from the west Texas town of El Paso,
Out through the badlands of New Mexico.
Back in El Paso my life would be worthless;
Everything's gone in life nothing is left.

But it's been so long since I've seen the young maiden,
My love is stronger that my fear of death.
I saddled up and away I did go, riding alone in the dark...
Maybe tomorrow a bullet may find me,
Tonight nothing's worse than this pain in my heart.

And as last here I am on the hill overlooking El Paso,
I can see Rosa's Cantina below.
My love is strong and it pushes me onward, down off the hill to Felina I go.

Off to my right I see five mounted cowboys,
Off to my left ride a dozen or more.
Shouting and shooting; I can't let them catch me,
I've got to make it to rose's back door.

Something is dreadfully wrong for I feel
A deep burning pain in my side.
Though I am trying to stay in the saddle,
I'm getting weary, unable to ride.
But my love for
Felina is strong and I writhe where I've fallen.
Though I am weary, I can't stop to rest

I see the white puff of smoke from the rifle,
I feel the bullet go deep in my chest.
From out of nowhere, Felina has found me,
Kissing my cheek as she kneels by my side.
Cradled by two loving arms that I'll die for,
One little kiss and Felina good-bye.

Bob Weir (of the Grateful Dead) did an admirably great job "covering" this song...coin flip for Marty vs.Bob on this one on "who did it best".

And for another epic "cowboy song", check out Bobby's version of "Me and my Uncle". The ending gives you an idea of the "morality" of SOME (certainly not all !) of those cowpokes.

Ah, translucent. Thanks Gordon, I couldn’t remember the term. I was close🙂

Well...I suppose you could say "translucent" if you like, but I have a patch of polar bear hair cut off an old "skin rug"..... given to me by a friend, to tie some crappie jigs with....it is white hair, to be sure. Hollow fibres, not unlike elk etc.....gives a buoyancy to the jigs that marabou and other "hairs" cannot.

You are right about the extra length is an advantage instead of a typical smaller rod. I can cast further, I can also raise my rod to maneuver my line to avoid obstructions or to keep the fish from going in a different direction.
I just purchased a couple of Berkely Trout Lightning rods. 8' UL, Lure 1/32-1/4 oz lure, line 2-6 lb. #BSLR802UL.
These poles are perfect for trout and smaller fish. I would not recommend for bass bc it would be hard to set the hook since the rod is noodley. Very nice looking rod also. Purchased at Walmart for $39.

I concur on the Berkeley Lightning 8'. Best trout rod I have ever owned.
