Going to mix up the thoughts post the next few days as we approach our 2nd most loved holiday from those youthful days. I will start with a ghost story today in hopes it chills your bones to relay one of your own as well to our FS members.
The year was 1994 and the wife was a realtor showing houses in down town Ellicott City area of Maryland. Just another day with a new customer. “ So she thought “. After all, Friday the 13th does have its quirks as we all know.
Around that 5pm sun dipping below the horizon time of day. The air had a Fall crispness to it even with a hint of moisture from a heavy dew setting in for the night before Halloween known as mischief night. Some say odd occurrences seem to take place along with childish pranks throughout neighborhoods on this sought after night of trickery.
The house to be shown was just a simple 1900 style side street abode long overdue in need of exterior re facing, but yet a charm to it that just maybe some one from this present time could make it into a home with a new enticement for living among such local antiquity.
Upon approaching with admiration of the structure, I was told a chill was felt by both the wife and the potential client raising the hair up on their sweater covered arms.
With eyes upon each other the wife knocked on the door. Leaves below their feet swirling about, papers in her grasp wanting freedom and did not see it, but a cat’s meow off in the distance.
With thoughts of a possible black cat’s crossing their path, again another knock at the door, but this time a twist of the door knob with no avail to see if it was unlocked. Footsteps within the dwelling were heard and some sense of relief came across these 2 ladies shorten moments of panic.
Shortly after the last sound of foot steps there came a voice from inside. “ Who is it “ said the male voice? So, with a cheery declaration as one could come up with while in anticipation of who is on the other side, the wait once again for the door to be unfasten and let in was at hand.
“ I will be right there “ said the voice as the street lights came on for the evening revealing there eerie shadows on the door before them.
Then, just as swift as the street lights illumination, head lights are seen coming up the street in the misty fog bank coming from Main Street. With much anticipation the selling realtor’s late arrival to the house and only smile among the 3 ladies is finally here.
With ample regret for being late the other agent said: “ Why are you standing outside, no one lives here and I left the door un locked for you ”? As she ushered them through the door way into what at one time was the Ellicott City jail.
Within 2 minutes time, a walk thru was completed while discovering the binding chains still anchored securely in the dingy cold stone basement walls. At last a hasty decision was at hand.
Yes, a true story everyone and no ghost was seen and obviously No sale for my wife that bone chilling Fall Evening.
