Yes I remember the cat walk ( fitting name ) very well. Fished more down by a little Marina that rented row boats right near the dam.
Could stand in the rentals to fish but better get out when that siren sounded.
In all my years fishing Conowingo I've seen many people caught up in the water or on rocks they were standing on get really wet. I was there when 2 kayakers drowned when they failed to heed the sirens. They were anchored and could not pull the ancors in time to get away. They both were recovered down where Deer Creek empty's into the River.
Taking my Dad fishing in Myrtle Beach the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd of October. Any current fishing reports? Are the Spanish and Blues biting yet from the pier?
They are catching a few right now. That's about all I know.
When I was younger I watched a guy and his wife catch some huge catfish. She had a board and was actually steaking them instead of fillet them. I was talking to a diver on the dam and he told me they had to check the inside base of the dam every so often to make sure all was good. He said he saw catfish that had to be 4 to 5 foot long. Also had a big small mouth pull me all over in my kayak above the dam. I really do miss that water.
Hey Teach do they sound an alarm when opening the gates?
I used to fish the Conowingo Dam on the MD / Penn line and we would just have enough time to reel in and that water was rushing bye.
I also fished the Susquehanna river below Conowingo Dam. Shad run in March and April and caught some nice walleye. That's the only thing I really miss about Maryland that and great crabbing.
I had the same experience while I was crabbing from a pier in NC. There was a couple from out of town also crabbing down from me. When I walked the pier toward them I saw the female put an under size crab in her bucket. I walked over and looked in the bucket and just about every crab was under size. I walked over the the gentleman and asked him if he resided here in NC. He said he was from up North and here on vacation. I advised him of the size a crab has to be to keep it (5") he said he was just visiting and wanted to steam up some crabs that night so he didn't see any harm in keeping them. I politely told him that if he didn't throw the under sized crabs back I would not hesitate to call DNR. At first he was irate but calmed down when I gave him my measuring stick to measure the crabs. Out of 9 crabs just 1 was a keeper. They left afte they threw the crabs back.
