It's funny, I have a bamboo fly rod that a friend purchased three or four at a yard sale, refurbished them all and I was given one. It's not made from composites or fiber glass, and it fishes just like any others that I have. I was attempting to make a point, I used to have to have the $600. rod $500 reel, none of it fished any better than a beginners combo that are inexpensive and sold by many different companies, so, a cane pole can be used just as effectively as any other rod and for someone starting out you get the complete package from the backing for the line placement attached, and leaders, also and the other sundry items I discussed, unless you need to be one of the Jones. I've seen spinning reels attached to fly rods, they have a couple fishing outing on you tube that not only shows them casting fishing, catching and so on.
Check out White Water fly fishing, they have complete combo set beginning around $90. That's fly rod, reel line on the reel flies, nipper and such with fly rod reel case, the complete start up package,including the doohickey to remove the fly from the fishes mouth, I'm still using a 5 weight I purchased from them 7-8 years ago, still works just fine, catch a few, mostly enjoy the solitude and scenery, that's for me.
FS, you're the one fishing, you can fly fish with a cane pole, it's your business what pole you decide to use.

FS, it would certainly help to know where you're located, City , state etc.. The stream up in the Smokie Mtn. of NC I used to fish were like that in the late 50's when i was just learning fly fishing as a youth 9-11 years old. an old timer from the area out to me that when i reached the area i was going to fish to sit down and relax. The fish had probably seen me coming he explained, wait awhile 20-30 minutes ease myself into a comfortable position very slowly and replace the fly in the same location like you stated seen the fly pass them by at. Keep in mind we weren't nymphing then but sure enough they came chasing, was i thrilled. He explained they were probably spooked by the appearance of an unknown and fish don't care for unknowns he explained. I've used this to my advantage ever since and find i do seem to catch more trout. What do you have to lose 20-30 minutes of serenity?
