Okay Stager knuckleheads. I want to have one of these framed for my office. Sunrise on the Foothills of The Smokies. Pics taken from my driveway.

Which one guys. Your vote will determine which one gets framed. #1 or #2. Thanks for the input.

Greg(ghaynes1)

My pick would be number 2 Greg. No power lines and a more country feel to it.

Depot Bay is narrower but bigger boats make it in and out with ease. I have been out several times through both ports and I would prefer Depot Bay. The swell is much smaller and sometimes none at all. Newport has a very tuff bar with swells of 9' + for a much longer distance.

I think that’s why the coast guard does their practice, rescue, maneuvers out of the bar there. We’ve spent hours out beyond the bar waiting to get back in after going out in the morning over a beautiful bar. Only to have the weather turn so fast we couldn’t get back in for a while.

Having spent my whole life in Newport, its a good bar…you can pretty much follow the crowds.
During strong ebbs, (such as now) a person can wait till change and go if your concerned.
Generally speaking the CC is pretty cautious, and restrictions are seen on the light board by the station…or call them.
Don’t even go inside the north reef, which runs parallel to he beach from the north jetty tip, pretty shallow and there isn’t much there anyway. Also the south reef pinnacle is a couple of fathoms deep, but as long as you run out to the whistle buoy, you can go any direction with no concern.

If there is or has been and strong NWer, expect a lumpy ride….pick your days and enjoy. You boat is just fine and most boats are about the same. Follow the crowds south and there are plenty of bottom fish, through crab pots north in 70 or so feet and plenty there.

Newport ramp is a zoo now a day on weekends, plan on waiting in line. Newport has gone down hill big time….and seems the go to port for the valley crowd. Depoe is real nice, it can be crowded….be sure and broadcast on ch 80 when going in or out….you don’t want to crowd a boat in the channel…especially a large one.

Have a good trip..

Anything Newport is a zoo now days. I avoid that dump like the plague. I spent 20 plus years on the Oregon coast and you’re, exactly, right. Newport has gone to the dogs big time.

Very narrow target and not a sraight shot IMO, not the best place to learn your boat. Yaquina is kinder to newbys.

Have you ever been out of garibaldi? That’s a nice big wide bar and very easy to navigate on most days. 👍

Hi, new to the site and new to boat ownership. 21' Starcraft with high walls, 150HP main with a 15HP kicker with VHF, bilge pump, fish finder, Garmin maps and Lowrance radar. Have heard horror stories as well as amazing success crossing the bar to fish. Wondering for a newbie what you all would recommend as far as tide, weather, wind and wave conditions to cross safely and back. I monitor the MANY web sites for buoy reports and wind forecasts that have been suggested but those are just info and without advise on how to use that info it's just a report. Love some advise on what combo of swell, period and wind should I use as a guideline for a comfortable trip?

1)Would love some input on best tides to head out of the bar and back in to the marina are (low slack, high slack, etc.)

2)What max wind speeds and directions you would not go out on based on size of boat and being new

3)What wave heights and timing you would say should be max and not test going out in

4) Tips on heading out and back riding the waves

5) Any other advise or tips worth taking in to consideration...want to fish and have fun but want safety first.

Thanks in advance!

I agree with Maid Marion. Don’t go out there by yourself until you’ve made lots of trips with a profession bar crosser. I went out over several of the bars on the Oregon coast but not until I had been out quite a few times with a professional. That ocean, and especially, the bars are very unforgiving. I’ve been out of Depot bay the most and it’s, by far, the easiest bar to navigate in a smaller vessel. To take that big pond for granted. 😬🤞.

I am a bit younger but I agree this type hook has served me well when targeting Bass. I will share a lethal Bass bait I like.

3" tube bait. I thread a worm onto the offset hook. I like to add salt and some fish oil in the tube. Slide the tube bait over the top of the worm or partial worm that was threaded onto the exact type hook in the picture.

My Buddies get ticked when I catch the biggest or most fish in a day when I add some real bait to my artificial lure....oily salty always seems to get a set...if you know what I mean..

That’s awesome. Got any pictures of all those fish. We’d love to see them👍

C H .... There are a lot of other things that could have created her problems, the timing of that and receiving her shot may be just a coincidence, don't you think? Not saying it was, but who knows?

Possible but not very probably nutz. All of the testing she’s through since her jab has been inconclusive and nobody can say why she has developed the issues she has. Even most of her doctors ( she has several now) are convinced it was the v*****e that started the whole mess. None of them have confirmed it wasn’t but you’re right. They haven’t confirmed it was either. It’s just rather odd she was so healthy two years ago with no, underlying, health issues what so ever. Then immediately after being v******ted for c***d she made a fast trip to her death bed with no history of medical issues at all.

Exactly, got one clown / jerk baiting me into a confrontation on 3 separate threads presently and i wont bite. Got his little one word spew going or a third party reference and i just use the Oz saying. " he who angers you, controls you "

No anger here, plenty of laughs at the dim wit.

👍. I hear ya. That approach gets em better than anything😂

Hoping to me your family sorry it didn't happen this sumer. But it will happen !!

It’ll happen soon Andy. The best time for fishing here is from December through June. We can catch tons of fish before it warms up and I’ll have my boat back together by next summer too so that makes the fishing easy. We can run down to the big river and hook up some 10 foot sturgeon for kicks too. They’re all catch and release here on the Big Salmon River but there’s a bunch of em. 👍

Nobody asked you to keep repeating. Just don’t. We believed you the first time. Take some of your own stress away and leave it be.

Not as much as you do Bob.i don’t “God Bless” people while stabbing them in the back. Those who are hiding things always have the reply “I don’t need to prove anything to you or anyone else”😉I’m very happy in my skin and I’m happy to “prove” anything to anyone who asks because I can. Aren’t you missing the game? Please go enjoy it with your family. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸👍

Man ,,you have got to be either the most unlucky ,,or most lucky human being to have experienced everything you said in your rant about the VA and other life experiences, I'm a happy old fart here where we live ,are you really happy? You're the the one here on the Forum that complains more than anyone Loco,,,🤙🤙

Stating facts and complaining are two different things in case you were wondering. Calling me names is not helping your reputation a whole lot. I guess you haven’t noticed the other posts people have made on this, very, thread about conflicts with the VA. 🤷‍♂️. I’m happy that you get a disability check and I’m happy I can pitch in and help pay that for you. You shouldn’t snap at the hand that feeds you. My tax dollars are going in your pocket. Yours are not going in mine.😉😎🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

I'dont feel sorry for you ,,you do ,,have you ever read what you print here? I hope you have Good Luck Fishing man , you are very odd,,BB made me feel again,, I was his last driver🙏

You missed it Bob. You’re the one looking for sympathy not me. I don’t need to tell everyone I’ve lost a family member all the time. Have you ever heard me tell about losing family members to war? Nope. I have just like thousands of other people but we don’t ask for recognition or sympathy for it. Your loss was devastating and my salute will, forever, be present for your brother. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸. He, along with hundreds of thousands of other soldiers are the reasons we can even be here having this conversation. For you to think, and say all the time, that You are the one that had a bad situation, I’m sure, makes you feel better but there are many of us in your shoes. I’m not going to go into details because I don’t feel the need to have everyone give me a pat on the back and tell me how sorry they are for my loss. MANY men and women have given all for our country. Hundreds of thousands of them and I salute them all. I was fortunate to return with nothing more than a slight limp and I don’t need to, constantly, remind everyone about it.
I wasn’t asking you to prove anything to me or anyone else. I was, genuinely, interested in learning about your injury and how it came to be. There were no active war zones when we were in the military so I was just curious. I told you about mine but, honestly, expected the reply I got. I should have know better. I try to have a civil conversation with you and you fire back with negativity followed by folded, praying hands. Those two thing shouldn’t go together.
Enjoy the game😉🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
