We have caught several sturgeon over the past couple of years in the Arkansas River around the Tulsa Oklahoma area. None longer than maybe 2 feet in length, but they are in there...
Wheaties cereal and strawberry soda pop make an excellent CARP/CAT dough bait.
Crush up 2 cups of Wheaties and add a little bit of soda at a time, and mix thoroughly into a ball.
You want the bait to be good and firm once properly mixed.
Use a #8 treble hook and form a small ball of bait around the hook no bigger than the diameter of a dime.
Cast the bait out in your favorite CARP/CAT hole, and if the bait is mixed properly, it will stay on the hook and not fall off.
Change bait and fishing spot every 20 minutes, until you locate the fish.
Make sure you hold onto your rod, because a carp, especially a big one, can hit like a freight train and WILL pull your rod in if you are not paying attention.
Good luck and enjoy your time out fishing with your grandson.
God Bless
I only fly fish for carp and fish Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado and Utah. I also tie my own carp flies, which makes it that much more rewarding...
I'm real big into carp fishing, but also love to fish for bass and catfish as well...
Hope to make a few friends over here, and maybe there will be a fellow carp angler in the bunch...
Tight lines
Sassy Shad, Rapala's and Umbrella Rigs. Have caught many bass there on these baits...
