From Elk Rapids 16 miles north of Traverse City, Michigan-rain this a.m. and 40 then-Boom! 4 inches of slushy snow. Hope all had a great holiday and great 2020 to come. Santa was goos-4 Bass Pro Shop gift cards!
Went to a local community college just to keep the cobwebs from forming and the subject came up on the '60 and Woodstock. A few of my fellow students stated that they heard about it from their grandparents-I chimed in with "dad wouldn't let me go so I went to 'Nam instead". Should have kept my mouth shut as from that point on I was addressed as sir or Mr. Reynolds. the younger generation-can't live with them-can't live without them. All have a great 2020 and tight lines!
I also use 10# PowerPro braid. Michigan early spring steelhead I use approx. 8-10 feet 10# mono tied to the braid using an Albright knot then a small 3 way swivel to that. on one of the eyes I run 8-10 " of 6# weight line and on the last eye ran approx. 3-4 ' of 4# fluro. ams hookup in the fall for the big Kings, lake trout and cohos but 6-8# fluro. Main line is 10# braid.
www.fishingandcatchingbass.com. A world of information on small/largemouth bass-evrythimg you need to know!!
Like you said, a good quality fishing vest/jacket. I steelhead in the spring and salmon fish in the fall ( Traverse City, Mi ) and carry EVERYTHING from weights, hooks leader-other line used, terminal, etc. I have forceps, braid cutting scissors, small multi tool/attached with nail clippers and a small hand "lip grip " all secured on elastic type retracible safety lines-help when you drop on. Small wire cutters and spare rubber band and extra lighters for my cigars. An old timers once told me " kid, you can't run home or back to the car to get something-carry everything you need and MIGHT need".
This idea is great and very affective.
Sorry for some of the typos-better check over next time before I send, but then again, I'm a fisherman, not a speller.
Wow-look at all the positive response! As a former police officer ( 30 yrs. Detroit ) yes carry some type of pepper spray-a very good one almost totaling disabling a person long enough for any escape is manufactures by Fox Corp. I have run into the "female angler" and some are newbies nd funny to watch but everyone's a rookie at one thing or another. I know several that are VERY accomplished fly fisherwomen and salmon/steelhead anglers that men ask them where thy ant to fish as they command that much respect for their fish in ability. In my fishing seminars I stress that you don't have to be a 250 pound linebacker to fish. God luck and if every in the Elk Rapids, Mi area look me up-I'll fish a stretch of the riverbank with you.
I have a 10 foot graphite rod medium light action. I use 10# Power Pro braid on my Mitchell 308 Pro reel and 8# test leader of Vanish fluorocarbon-no problem landing 2-30 pounders. But, you have to play the fish out!
What kind of bait did you use on this catch and what kind for the fish?
Hi Kelly and welcome to Michigan. You're not too far from me as I live in Elk Rapids/ We have a power dam in town that has GREAT smallmouth bas ( 14" legal BUT we get up to 20+ in this area, We also have three fishing docks wheelchair accessible along with two new port-a-potties right by the docks. Springtime we get, again 25-32" steelhead and in the fall, now, in this same area by the dam the king, coho, atlantic salmon, steelhead ( fall strain ) brown and lake trout also are in the dam area. BIG fish for a small area.
I also host a yearly free fishing expo at our harbor pavilion running a panel of 6-8 "experts" ( we catch fish when others don't ) along with 2-3 DNR members. Our shows pull upwards of 100-150 a show. We try to get the expo in the 3rd Wednesday of June. I have a buddy that is a tournament bass expert from Florida that, now, lives in Elk Rapids. I'm sure that he would welcome your expertise in this idea as we don't have a lot of tournaments but it is catching on for the three lakes ( Elk, Torch and Skegmog ) in our immediate area have great bass ( both large/smallmouth ) fishing. I'm retired ( 30 years Detroit Police ) and also a vet ( "class of "69 ) Give me a shout out for any other info you might need.
Have a friend in Monroe, Mi that collect the Mitchell reel-must have over 50 an worth money!
I have been using Accuweather.com for my immediate area ( Traverse City, Mi ) and have found it very accurate.
Cool, I've had another fish go after the lure in a caught fish but never a double hookup. BUT, I have had a larger fish inhale a caught fish while reeling in the smaller fish.
