I was told it is pretty much the father of all quality reels.

Also what kind of rod should I pair it up with? It doesn’t fit the one I wanted to put it on as well as I thought it would.

There are at least 30 YouTube videos on that real. Parts are also still readily available. Use a 5-8' medium rod with 8-12 lbs monofilament. Personally, it's on a 6'5" rod w/ 8 lbs test. I use it for wading in a river 3-7' with pockets at deep at 10'

I’ll take that as a good thing. Got it and an extra spoil for $15 as long as it’s going to keep working that’s all I care about

French made, rotor turns bass-ackwards from most, weighs a ton, will outlast a Volvo of similar vintage. Bail springs are it's weakness.

It will have a number stamped on it to tell you the year made, I had one just like that that I finally traded a guy that collected old Mitchell stuff. They started making that reel in the early 50's, it will last forever if you take care of it but those old spinning reels will digest the line under the bonnet and are also known for twisting the hell out of mono.

I have a new Mitchell 308 and be it me or not the new reel doesn’t seem as good as the one from the late 50’s. I bought the new 308 based on my experience with one I used in the 50’s and 60’s and can’t say I am impressed with the new one in comparison.
