Mike: I'm on the West Coast (Tampa Bay) and have been able to catch a few spotted trout, drifting slowly over grass flats (about 4' of water) using live shrimp weighted with only split-shot under a float about 3'. I too would like any advice anyone would like to offer. Regards, Jim C.

I am also from the RI area and fish and mated on a six pack boat when I moved to Florida I thought I was a fairly good fisherman , was I in for a surprise it’s all different but it will come with time. I m not a inshore fisherman but my neighbors on the canal are they use a popping cork with live shrimp and use light jig head maybe 1/4 to 1/2 oz with gulp and they all drift the grass flats they do very well on trout and mackerel when there around. Hope this helps . Joe

Also note there are new fishing runs for reef fish to have a way to take your fish back down (Desender) if they are not to be kept check your local rules
Capt Tom

If you sign up to return em right they will send you a descending unit with weight and also one that is pressure release type free of charge and they work great it’s the best way to release them alive venting works but ars are hard to release alive this works

Also use short leader 18 inch to 2 ft 50 lb fluorocarbon then swivel and a sinker slider aka fish finder so you can change sinker weights as needed to hold bottom

There’s no structure these fish lay in what we call cheese holes so you don’t see structure or even fish we drift fish it till we get multiple hook ups and mark the spot you’ll see the ars on your fishfinder but rarely the red grouper, fish the water depth more than the numbers were running down there from new port richey

I like bottom fishing and putting food on the table, although might try Tarpon fishing for fun. I bought a used 31 Contender to get offshore and am learning the waters. Problem is, there is a lot of bottom between port and 40-50 miles offshore.

We fish down your way last Thursday and did well on the red grouper in 103 ft to 118 ft of water on frozen threadfin and lots of lane and vermilion snapper on squid you have the right boat also when the ars season opens we had a half dozen big.ones we released in the same area

I went on my first deep drop trip recently and did okay in bad conditions with 3 decent tiles. I was using the charters squid and mackerel (only caught on squid), and was being outfished by some guys who had salmon and surprisingly one guy was using trout. Wanted to know of some of your guys opinions on what the best baits to use for tiles? Was thinking of deep dropping a live eel for the heck of it, and maybe try to find some cheap/leftover salmon somewhere. Let me know what y’all think works! Thanks

My neighbors are in the keys right now deep dropping, they use squid and are not doing as good this time as in previous trips where you fishing and how deep

While I was fishing the river yesterday my Stepson went offshore with some friends. Brought back 4 Dolphin. (No pics). But while fishing for Dolphin caught about 80 inch Blue Marlin. Catch and release.

Any docks around? If you can't get on them because they are private toss towards them.

Not sure where on RI your trying your luck but if your near pt Judith go down to the docks where the dragger’s a taking out they flush a lot of junk fish over and it creates a chum slick for those stripers I would use a chunk of bunker and just throw it towards the boat and let it drift in the stuff there throwing over there’s some huge bass around those docks, free food for them , good luck
