I've been salmon fishing Alaska for the past 9 years. Leaving in 2 weeks for 5 weeks of fishing. For the halibut I would get a charter. They will get you on the fish. As for the salmon in the river. It should be silvers that are running. For silvers I use a spinning rod 8'6" med action, 20# line. Caught most of my silvers on salmon eggs.
Go to YouTube and search "Silver salmon fishing Ketchikan". I did that for where I fish in Soldotna and the Kenai River and there were tons of videos on how to fish the area.
You are in for the time of your life!

My 10-year-old grandson Lucus came, and we did a whole week of fishing. What a great time we had. We caught a good number of smallmouth and also a couple of days we put some walleyes in the boat. The first day we caught a lot of smallmouths in which Lucus caught his pb. Tried for walleye but not even a bite. The next few days we caught a few smallmouth and still no walleye. I was having a hard time keeping him interested in the walleye. Finally on Thursday we got into them. Matter of fact Lucus caught the first one and it was also his first walleye ever. Then he proceeded to out fish me. Lucus landed 6 walleyes to my 3 and two of my three were the smallest. Could probably have gotten our limit of 6 each but grandpa forgot one of the containers of worms for tipping the jigs and we ran out of worms. On Friday no walleye but did good on the smallmouth.
We decided on Saturday to start at daylight because of a walleye tournament on the lake. We had some real good luck and located a school of fish off a point in the first 5 minutes we started fishing. We pounded that point for two hours and caught our limit of walleye. We were happy campers.
It was a great week. Lots of fun watching Lucus learning how to tie his own jigs on with the proper knot, baiting his own jig, unhooking his own fish and many other aspects of fishing. I also noticed to his credit he is a very fast learner.
Lucas said he had a lot of fun but I think I had the most fun. This will be a great memory for me.

Over the years I have gone to the longer rods. From 6' to everything I use is 7' plus. I like the longer casts. I have also gone to medium action over heavy action. More give in the rod makes it harder for the fish to pull the hook out.

I live 30 miles south of Glendo in Wheatland. In Wyoming that's right next door. I don't fish Glendo, but I fish Greyrocks, here at Wheatland. I do talk to a lot of fishermen that do. Both lakes fish about the same. Best fishing is mid-May to mid-June. Most use bottom bouncers with a worm harness tipped with a worm, minnow and sometimes leeches. There are guides at Glendo. Good luck

In the pic below are two of my favorite soft baits for smallmouth. The one on the right has produced a lot of smalljaws. I used to throw them a lot. The problem with them is the pinchers would get bit off. The result was the fish were swallowing them. Usually, the smaller ones. I have caught smallmouth that would even cough them up when unhooking them. Several times I was sure it was from my own baits.
I have to think that this plastic in their stomachs has to harm the fish or even kill them. Does anyone have any thoughts or knowledge on plastic being in a fish's stomach?

In 1978 I bought a Bass Tracker 2 from BPS. It sold for $2295 with a 40hp Mercury and a Minnkota trolling motor. It was 16ft with 2 livewells one was aerated. BPS had only 3 models at the time, and they were being made by Terry Bass boat. I wore that boat out.
I've owned several boats since then. Like to think I am smarter now. I would never buy a new boat now. To many used ones that have little use on them. A guy buys a new boat uses a year or two and then it just sits in the garage. They are like cars they do depreciate.
I'm about ready for an upgrade and have been looking. Just not ready to part with the money. The boat I have now was a little older but not much use and had been sheltered all of its life. I bought it in November. The seller wanted $4200 for it. I flashed 30 one-hundred-dollar bills in his face. I left with the boat.

You can get any kind of groceries you will need in Kenora. Several grocery stores in town. The two different outfitters I used included the fishing license.

I have taken about a half dozen trips Out of Kenora to outpost camps. Loved every minute. Some trips were way better than others. Still had to find the fish.
Here is a couple of tips. The mosquitoes can be bad especially after dark. I always took some duct tape to seal off any holes in the window screens. Also, a package of mosquito coils to help keep them away.
For the fishing I would take some 10# steel leader. It will tie like mono to your lure. Not a pretty knot but will hold. This allowed me to catch the pike with a jig and not have them bite off my jig.
Good luck on your trip.

Ben, you did the right thing taking that guy out. I was in a similar situation with my wife at risk. I took that guy down hard. Threat eliminated. Now that I am older, I carry 24/7. My wife wants me to carry. Makes her feel safer. Here in Wyoming, we have a saying "An armed society is a polite society."

I collect vintage fishing gear. My favorite is vintage reels from the early 1950's and 1960's. Here are three reels from about 1950 to 1955. They are referred to as side winders. The line came out of the covered spool from the side. They are somewhat of a cross between a spin cast and a bait caster. Some had drags these do not. No free spool and they are direct drive. So, when you casted them the crank turned. Each of these were from a different manufacturer. I've included some paperwork on how to use them. I think you will see why they were short lived.
I love the old reels to look at but give me the new ones of today to fish with.
Has anyone used a side winder?

I used to go to Canada and would fly into remote lakes. I would take a depth finder with me. For a battery I would take two 6-volt lantern batteries and hook them up in series to make 12-volts. Worked pretty good and was cheap.

I have two depth finders on my boat. One mounted on the transom and one on my electric trolling motor. I have pretty modest finders. They show fish but I don't trust them. I want to know the depth. I fish mostly for smallmouth and some walleye. I've learned if I'm catching fish in six feet of water the next cove or bank will have fish at that depth also.
