Hey all, looking for some input on Salmon and Halibut fishing in Ketchikan Alaska. Got an opportunity to cross an item off my bucket list and took it. Going up with a group in Mid September and its unguided (one guy has been going for 20 years and is more or less the group leader). I will be taking my own tackle, of course I’ll be doing my internet research and getting input from the group I’m going with, but I like to leave no stone unturned and am wondering if anyone on The Stage can provide me with any advice as to tackle and gear I will need. Most of the time will be river fishing for Salmon and a day or so for Halibut (not sure of the details yet, charter boat, rental boat or otherwise). Any experience or knowledge is truly appreciated!!

Sounds like the one you should be talking to and receiving information from is the one you stated as your team/group leader

I suggest Charter for Halibut. Salmon you can just follow wherever the crowds are. We hooked a bunch on Byrd creek but its by Anchorage and the Russian near Kenai for reds. Guides will know where the Halibut are. Barn doors. They are big. Might need reservations too.

Thanks Jeremy, what level of tackle, rod, braid etc were you using?

We bought Coho flies at Kmart up in Anchorage. Cheap ones and cut most of the horse hair or whatever it was for the red fishing, it’s flossing. We also went fishing on the Deska a few times for Silvers.

Rods were spinning with 12-15 lb main. 10 or so mono. All mono it was 22 years ago though. Milk beer and whiskey was 2 or 3 times the costs than here.

I was too late for king fishing which you will be too unless someone knows where etc.

I think homer has hood Halibut fishing but we never got that far.

I was there to help get a friends house construction started. We did concrete. It was like Lego blocks but you fill them with concrete as stem walls for building. Insulation and concrete all in one step.

Been wanting to take a cruise from Seattle to Alaska and back but don’t want to deal with Covid19 still. I made it this far without it. Still don’t want it.

Mid September is prime time for winter kings in the bays. I go to Homer anywhere from mid September through November and we knock em dead. My daughter went to Ketchikana few years ago silver fishing and they caught some monsters out of a boat but they weren’t river fishing. There’s fish to be caught in the rivers around there year round. I’m sure you buddy has the best info for where you’re going if he’s been there a lot. For halibut we use a sturdy, 6 and a half foot rod spooled with 50 pound, minimum mono line. Anything smaller than that and a big halibut will just snap you off. Drag set just strong enough to set the hook then hang on and hope they don’t spool ya. It’s a blast. When we get the bigger ones played out (like 30 minutes after we set the hook) we spear em and turn em loose hooked to an anchor body. Then just watch the body till it stops making a wake and go get em. Tuna balls for bait (fresh tuna) 20 pound minimum on the salmon. There’s some big fish lurking around up there. Good luck and have a great time.

I've been salmon fishing Alaska for the past 9 years. Leaving in 2 weeks for 5 weeks of fishing. For the halibut I would get a charter. They will get you on the fish. As for the salmon in the river. It should be silvers that are running. For silvers I use a spinning rod 8'6" med action, 20# line. Caught most of my silvers on salmon eggs.
Go to YouTube and search "Silver salmon fishing Ketchikan". I did that for where I fish in Soldotna and the Kenai River and there were tons of videos on how to fish the area.

Well worth it ain’t it? Like no other experience I’ve had. I have commercial fishing buddies that live there but a couple hundred bucks for a guide is money well spent for a halibut trip. They’ll put you right over the fish and we’ve caught them in 60 feet of water. It’s nothing like halibut fishing off the Oregon coast where you gotta fish 900 feet of water and maybe catch one and maybe not. I’ve been going up to Homer for about the same amount of time. Where in Wyoming are you? I was born and raised in Sheridan. Left there in 99 but still have family there and go back often.

Thanks Mbrill, I think between the info I’m receiving here, my internet researching and our trip leader I’ll have the info I need to properly gear up for the trip.
