Sportsmans Warehouse has an Okuma dedicated Kokanee rod reel combo for $100. It’s a Celilo style rod 7’6” with an Okuma level wind with line counter. I believe Okuma also has a SST model dedicated to Kokanee.

The catch and release season ended on Oct. 31. The entire system is closed for all species until December 1. December 1 to the last day of February fishing is open for whitefish only upstream from Gold Creek (about 17.4 miles upstream from the mouth of the Methow).

The Methow is divided into 8 separate sections but the regs are basically the same for the whole river other than closing date for the regular season. Much of the river closes on Oct. 31 the portion pasted in below closes on the 30th of Sept.
Cut and pasted from the regulation book:
"from Gold Creek to Foghorn Dam CRC (621)
All species Selective gear rules. Internal combustion motors prohibited.
All game fish Sat. before Memorial Day-Sept. 30 Catch-and-release.
Whitefish Dec. 1-Last Day of Feb. Statewide min. size/daily limit. Whitefish gear rules. Open for whitefish only."

Better check your regs carefully; the fish washington app says the Methow is closed to all fishing...

I just got my girlfriend's dads stuff...like 4 large tackle boxes full. He hadn't fished in close to 15 years, but before that he was pretty hard core. No one in the family wanted them so I gave them a home. Added to the 4 or 5 boxes of my own stuff after 55 years of fishin', it's quite the collection.

My youngest son is all about fishin' (and the outdoors in general) but he's the only member of my family that's interested (he's 25 and still single). I figure after I'm gone, he can open a tackle store!

TheGoldMan says he tied the braid “into” the spool. Many bait casters have holes through the spool which prevent the braid from slipping. I work in the fishing department at my local Sportsmans Warehouse and I spool reels nearly every day. Even with the rubber band on many new spinning reels we still use 10-15 yards of mono first then double uni the braid and fill ‘er up. Same on casting reels without the holes in the spool. Anyway, 50 lb. braid has the diameter of something like 10 lb. mono so bulk shouldn’t be an issue but it is still a bit heavy. Because braid is susceptible to nicks I see many bass addicts use 30 lb. They figure it buys them a little insurance if the line gets damaged. I see more bass fishers go with braid than mono...maybe 2 or 3 to one.

Excellent! Brookies are non native here in Washington but of course years ago they got “planted” at many locations -especially higher mountain lakes. I don’t think they’ve stocked them for quite a while now so they are essentially wild when you find them. Much tastier than the put-and-take trout so prevalent these days.

Yeah, these are all pretty good. Hope I can get other stuff done today without thinking about these!

I strongly recommend getting the spare spools. If you advance in flyfishing you will avoid having to buy a new reel for each type of line you experiment with. If it turns out flyfishing isn’t for you, spare spools would make it easier to “liquidate assets” later.

I have an Orvis Battenkill with 1 spare; been using it for (geez, I’ll have to guess here) 35 years. With a modest income, it took me a few years to work up to needing a third but have wished I had 2 spares every since.
