Kokanee...Snubbers, Kokanee Rods, Or Both?

When I first started Kokanee fishing I used snubbers as I had lost a few, then we got a pair of good Kokanee rods with line counting reels. I've heard people saying they think a Kokanee rod is as good or better than snubbers, what says the Kokanee guys out there?

We caught a Koke top lining so I figured I'd use the Kokanee rods next time out and target them with the right lures, which also hammer trout and salmon in Berryessa.

They are about 6-1/2 feet long, and very limber all the way through the body, they have a nice feel actually. When you have a fish on the whole rod is in play down through the spine. They are called "Fisherman's Friend Trout and Kokanee Special". We lose very few if any, I have still been using snubbers with them. We had come to the conclusion that they are a must have for Kokanee, there is a whole array of specialty rods made for them.

Oh, I misspoke about the line counting reels, we got little bait casters and put line counters on the rods that work well.

I fish for Kokanee using a Lamiglas 71/2’ fiberglass rod without a snubber. It has a very flexible tip with a strong backbone. I use a Tica bait caster without a line counter with 8# mono for the stretching affect. Using a finesse retrieving method I seldom lose a fish. Good luck and 🐟 on.

PS I have a daughter that lives in El Dorado

I just looked at Fishfield.com and they have the Lamiglas Kokanee rods on sale for $65. Eagle Claw makes a decent one for around $35. Depends on your budget. 🐟on

excuse me I need to fish now Loc: Puyallup, Washington (near Tacoma)

Sportsmans Warehouse has an Okuma dedicated Kokanee rod reel combo for $100. It’s a Celilo style rod 7’6” with an Okuma level wind with line counter. I believe Okuma also has a SST model dedicated to Kokanee.

Tica, lamiglass, okuma. Yes! Buy kokanee rods and get some downriggers. No need for snubbers!

I use a utra lite ugly stick with a penn levelwind 920 . I very old reel but so I'm I. I use my personnel poor man's downrigger that I made. I just look at the depth on my fish finder and they just count out the line , I never miss I do well and very rarely do I lose a Kokanee trout on the other hand yes I can lose trout, if I don't set the hook .the poles are exceptionally light ,I love them. I wouldn't use anything else.

I thought I’d share this with you since you use the poor mans down rigger.
