Great looking place and fish. Thanks for the photos. Are there humongous bass in there like there are in Castaic?

Yes and they have big appetites. Unfortunately, the dam is due for maintenance and they are going to start draining the lake in a couple weeks.

After continuously having our trip postponed since Spring Break. Lake Piru finally opened the lake and camp grounds. Unfortunately, the day before we were scheduled to be there, we received an email stating the lake will be closed. They never opened the lake, so the boat stayed dry, but we hiked and did some bank fishing.

So I have been fishing since I was 12. Ive always used spinning rods when bass fishing. I recently bought a baitcaster to learn on and its just so frustrating. Ive watched a couple videos and I understand a little on how to adjust the reel to the wait of your lure but I still get backlash and it just ends my day fishing with me cutting all my line off and then using my spinning rod. I see how the baitcaster are useful and I would like to get it down and add it to my fishing arsenal. Any tips or anything for a beginner?

When you're starting out you probably notice the back lash starts before the lure even hits the water, which is fixed between the spool speed and break adjustment, but your thumb is your best friend. Use it a lot. Don't wait for the lure to hit the water. Feather your thumb on the spool to slow it down if needed. As you get more confident you can start feathering less and it will go farther.

Yes, I hear from other people that both lakes produce very large bass, but I have only caught in the 1 - 3 lb range. Thank you! I will post pics if I don't get skunked.

Welcome to the forum FatRap. I was born and raised in Ventura county. Never really fished when I lived there. My Dad took us to fish off the Ventura pier a few times when I was really young. Where do you fish down there?

I usually fish at Lake Piru, as I don't need to quarantine my boat in order to launch there. It is reopening June 1st and we have reservations to camp (RV) for a week. Lake Casitas is one of my favorites, but the water level there is the last lake in the reservoir chain to improve.

Hi everyone,
I am going to lake Isabella this weekend and was wondering if anyone has news on the fishing there over the last couple weeks?

https://www.tackleandrod.com/weekly-fishing-report.htm

According to the link above, it's been very good for all species. It's also crowded, because Lake Isabella is about the only Lake open, until June 1st anyway.

Good Luck and catch some monsters!
