So I have been fishing since I was 12. Ive always used spinning rods when bass fishing. I recently bought a baitcaster to learn on and its just so frustrating. Ive watched a couple videos and I understand a little on how to adjust the reel to the wait of your lure but I still get backlash and it just ends my day fishing with me cutting all my line off and then using my spinning rod. I see how the baitcaster are useful and I would like to get it down and add it to my fishing arsenal. Any tips or anything for a beginner?

Use more tension on the dial than the videos show. You won't cast as far but it will be less likely to backlash until you are more used to it. As you get more comfortable start slowly using less tension till you get to where it should actually be. At least that worked for me.

Use mono to start. Braid can be difficult to learn on.

I started practicing flipping/pitching at home. I just tied a weight on and started in the yard. I would flip/pitch at different things at different distances to start getting a feel and timing down. I know it can be frustrating. I pulled out alot of shittys while cussing under my breath. Just like anything else, the more time you practice at something, the better you'll get.

So I would leave the tension to the weight of the lure like those videos show you, But I recommend messing with the brake. Put the brake up all the way and every so often lesson it a bit.

Also, make sure you are using a smooth casting motion. You cant use the same whipping motion as you do when you try to cast nukes with your spinning reel. Do a long follow through keeping your thumb on the Spool and thumbing to stop

Okay I did notice I was doing better when I wasn't cranking when I cast. Thanks for the tip!

Tape a couple hex nuts together as a makeshift lure, a yard jig if you will, and practice in your yard. Start off heavy then go lighter as you get better. That way you don’t ruin a fishing trip.

Practice. Practice. Practice. Start with really short casts and remember your thumb control it’s really important to thumb the spool right when the lure hits the water. There are ways to save your line rather than cutting it out check out fixing birds nest on you tube will save you a lot of money. It’s sometimes not easy and takes some time but pulling out the best is totally doable

I actually just started using one 2 weeks ago. I started with a 1/8 weight in my yard and used the magnetic braking feature for my reel. Eventually I'd get to the point where I could turn it all the way down then I'd go up in weight and repeat. I've found for me the hardest part was using your thumb as a brake. Just keep at it and keep practicing. Birds nests are gonna happen, it happens to everyone. It's very rewarding though and I've really enjoyed learning to use one. Keep at it and good luck!

Try not to do an overhand cast. It’s harder to get backlash when you do more of a roll cast. Angle the rod so it is about parallel with the ground, but still slightly pointing up. Without realizing your thumb, swing the rod once so the weight spins in and then release your thumb when the lure is just above the low point in the swing. Use a good fluorocarbon coated line. I like pline flouroclear. Also the heavier the bait the better. Start out with a 1/2 ounce weight and then once you get the feel for it, start using lighter stuff. Hope that helps

Say, Hoss: What kind and strength line are you using. That will have a lot to do with your having some backlashes. Also, it could be you have a stiffer rod and that also affects how you cast and whether you will have back lashes. Others have mentioned it, but a lot of practice will finally equip you with enough skill to master using a bait caster. Before spinning reels, everyone had to go through this painful learning curve.

Zoey, you use baitcaster s, right or wrong? Do you or have you tried the wrist rotation to eliminate a backlash, we’ll virtually? It works.

Good Morning Mr. Twister :)
Yes, since I was twelve, seems like a long time. But in reality it's only been almost eight years. I'm not sure what that is?
I think I keep my wrist straight.
