Check the guides on your rod, it's possible one has a rough spot that's nicking your line.

Agree that it sounds like a bad guide(s). but that it only happens with one type lure may indicate the lure is the problem. Check the eyelet you tie to on the lure for any sharp edges.

Hey rod builders,
Is it possible to replace rod handles?
I have a 30 something year old Eagle Claw Boron spinning rod on which the original foam rubber foregrip and handle both dry rotted and are gone. I have debated taping it similar to a softball bat or a tennis racket. The blank is good, the guides are good and the reel seat is in good shape. Is there another option?

This has worked for me many times. Find a complete handle with a rod blank still attached. Cut the rod blank with a fine tooth hack saw (metal cutting blade) so that about 2 feet of the blank remains. The important part here is to match the outside taper of this cut blank to the rod that needs the handle at least 2/3rd's of the way into the rod blank you're adding the handle to. Also, best to cut off any but wrap threads, if any, from the blank your mounting to. With a metal file lightly rouge up this blank so the surface is no longer smooth, but not so much as to leave deep cuts or scratches. Take some masking tape and wrap it around the fore grip to prevent any epoxy used in the next step from getting on it.

Now mix up a batch of 60 minute LIQUID epoxy (my favorite is Devcon). Make sure it's a good mix ie. 50/50 resin and hardener. Now pour it into the blank you are mounting. About two tablespoons will be enough for light to medium fresh water rods. Naturally this blank will be tip down for the pour. Now take your handle/cut down blank piece and insert it into the epoxied blank. set the rod upright, and allow the epoxy to run down over the inserted cut blank, twisting it and pulling the epoxied blank up and down, but just a few inches. You want to get full coverage of the epoxy on the handle blank and inside the mounted blank.

Make sure the guides match up with the reel seat and set the whole rob and handle someplace where it will be undisturbed in a vertical position for at least 24 hours. Better if you leave it longer to be sure a complete cure for the epoxy. When cured, remove the fore grip tape and with both hands, flex the rod like in false casting. You most likely will hear some cracking noise. This will be epoxy not attached to both blanks breaking when flexing the rod. This is normal and will not in any way compromise the two bonded blanks. As said, I've done this many time over the last 40 plus years and it has saved many a rod.

My conventional reel with braid does this weird thing where I will cast it out about 20 30 feet and the lure willl stop midair and then I look at the reel and there is a really small birds nest in the line. I take out the birds nest everytime but it happens over and over again.

If you grab the spool, do you get any play when trying to move it back and forth sideways? If so, you need to put more free spool tension on the spool with the spool tension knob found on the side plate. When it's too loose the spool will overrun on your casts, creating a knot of "loops" in you line. This adjustment should be made for the weight of the bait/lure you are using. Do this by adjusting the spool tension knob until your bait/lure can SLOWLY pull line off the spool due solely to the bait/lure's weight.

Kinda brings back memories of Uncle Josh. Let us know how it works.

That was a great bait. I read somewhere they went out of business because modernized hog farm raising was producing hogs with hide quality below Uncle Josh's standards, due to added antibiotics and growth hormones and other feed additives to cut costs and increase profitability.
Yes, a great loss to sport fishing, and glass jars!

We actually call them "Canal Tuna" here in SW Florida. Pound for pound, one of the hardest fighting fish there is. Under 5 Lbs and they are excellent eating as well, fillet and bake.

As a rule, you get what you pay for. There are exceptions; you can find some great deals on quality lures iof you spend the time looking online.
As for the really but good looking inexpensive types you see, they are made in China, and while they appear adequate, they suffer in quality. Not just the injected molded bodies, but inferior hooks and eyelets the hooks attach to. They are quick to rust in fresh water, and salt water eats them like candy!
The same is not true however for the soft plastic body lures without attached hardware. I've tried many and they seem to be fine; that is to say they work well and catch fish. As to their chemical composition, aside from being PCP based, who knows.
With all the lures on the market, no reason to stray from the trusted brands made here in the USA or from Japan. Or you can make your own. There are lots of online YouTube instructions to get you started. That's an option I chose to follow since I started fishing some 60 plus years ago; it's fun, a great off season satisfy'er, and you'll wind up with more one of a kind lures than can be used in ten lifetimes!
But again, just remember, As a rule, you get what you pay for.

Those were called Lucky Thirteens in my day and they have been varied in a lot of colors, for instance , a friend of mine had a "Scrambled Egg" version. It looked like it had been immersed in scrambled eggs. It was his all time favorite lure.

Yes, it's a Lucky 13 for sure.

Soak the fillets/steaks in whole milk overnight in the fridge. This will draw out the urine that permeates their meat and which makes them test like piss. Works great on Bluefish too.

Sense the beginning most all crank baits, top water baits and a few I’m forgetting have treble hooks. Take em off. Think the fish haven’t noticed? Replace em with a good short shank hook. To the fish it’s new and you will have more hook ups. The one leg to them is a different offering.

Agreed. Not just short shank either, but circle hooks as well. They will get you the same lip hook up as when using them with bait. True, you may miss a fish or two now and then, but that's mostly do to the "set the hook" reaction habitual to lure fisherman. Get a hit, just reel normally to set the hook.
Cheers 🐟
PS- Try them with a Bullet Bobber in a current, which lets you steer your lure left or right on command, but never having to reel the lure in. One cast and you can work that lure all day long covering as much area as your spool capacity allows.
