Anyone know of any place where the fish are biting around the Twin Cities right now? A good, on-shore, place would be nice.

Thanks.

There is limited fishing available right now in MN. You can fish crappie, perch, bullhead and sunfish. If I were going out now (and is probably still too early, I would go to the boat launch on Lake Harriet. This is an early season haven for crappies (if the water is warm enough).

Such a handsome dog! Cherish that dog. I have had multiple Goldens and every time I think of them, tears come to my eyes. I miss them all. This pup reminds of my last one, Maverick. Same look as your puppy.

Hosting son Ben’s Britt Boone, he just turned 2 and is a bundle of energy. Running him out at my buddy’s farm to blow off steam every day but he’s a lot better at tiring me than I him. The kids get back tomorrow an so am looking forward to the break. Haven’t been able to fish while taking care of him the past week and am going a bit stir crazy.

Beautiful dog(s). Thanks for sharing this, I am a real dog lover!

I actually interviewed for a job at J.C. Whitney once. Got turned off when roaches were crawling around the floor during the interview.

Lakemap

Go to https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/lakefind/index.html and look up the lake. The DNR will have a lake map there. You can also buy them at a lot of tackle stores.

Here are a few charts from the resort I go to in Canada to fish musky. The first is the historical results at the lodge since 1987 and encompasses 18017 caught muskies. The second shows catches by moon phase (a favorite topic for everyone).

Some things to note - there has not been a musky kept since the year 1999. Up in that neck of the woods, people just don't keep any muskies. Secondly, the moon phase chart is pretty even over the years, especially since the majority of musky fisherman want to book the full moon.

Rita doesn't join in to the dancing until about half way through...

Well it’s Christmas Eve and with our abnormal winter in the northland, it was bound to happen! We have been watching the brave souls that are tooo fish hungry, venturing out onto potentially thin ice! Well, it happened this morning! It rained here overnight(still raining now) and a hard sided fish house has gone through the ice! It was one of three on the bay where we live. First and foremost, in my opinion, I think they’re idiots! It has been unseasonably warm all winter so far. We just watched the owner walk out to it to survey his dilemma! It’s been all over the news! Use some common sense! Now his problem is, he has to wait for a good freeze for it to be safe and thereby make better ice which will turn his fish house into a giant block of ice! Hopefully no one will get harmed( or killed) with this fiasco! Sorry for venting about this dudes bad circumstances! Use your heads people!

I once worked with a hard core ice fisherman in Minnesota. His goal was always to be the first with his truck on the water at his favorite lake. He managed to put a brand new three day old Ford F150 truck through the ice. The truck was totaled. Not being dissuaded he performed the same behavior every year after that (as long as I worked with him). Twenty years later he is still alive and engaging in the same antics. Charles Darwin has a leash attached to him. He will be claimed!

Ice is NOT something to be careless about.

Im from Northern California so I have never caught a Northern or a Muskie. I actually thought those pictures were Muskies? Do Muskies get bigger than Pike? And how do they taste? Ive heard that Walleye are one of the best tasting fresh water fish? Well at least I can fish and catch Sturgeon, Stripers and Lingcod on this side of the US. Maybe we can trade fish some time over FedX??

Those are pike. Pike have rounded tail fins and light markings on a dark background. Muskies have pointed tail fins and dark markings on a light background. Muskies are MUCH harder to catch and grow considerably larger than northerns. Tiger muskies (Northern x Musky) have rounded tail fin, very bold dark markings on a light background.

In the northern U.S. and Canada I do not know anyone who will keep a musky to eat. For example, I have a log of 17,000 muskies that were caught at the resort I go to in Canada.Since the year 2000, there has not been a kept muskie. Muskies are not a common fish and typically require 200 acres of water or more.

Walleyes are indeed a great eating fish. It has white flesh, is not bony and is easy to clean.

I thought I would share with you some pixs of my favorite fish to chase, the Northern Pike. Many fishermen look down on them and many states F & G try to eradicate them. The state I live in, Idaho, actively gill nets them to near extermination in some lakes. They put a label on them here as an invasive species. But they are no more so than almost every other fish that swims in our waters. They are just a non-native fish just like all the Bass, Perch, Crappie, Sunfish, whitefish and most of the trout. The only native fish here are the Sturgeon. Bull trout and Squawfish, as well as the salmon runs in some parts of the state. Pike actually got to many waters here in N. Idaho by migrating down stream from Montana. Pike are native to parts of Montana, so I would call that natural expansion. It really ticks me off, they target one species as invasive only because they get paid to do a witch hunt on them. I have studied Pike habits and diet, and they do less harm to the ecosystem than Smallmouth Bass do by far, which we have millions of in this state, but no-one is saying we need to kill all of them. Anyway, getting off my soap box now, and thought I would share with you some pictures of my favorite fish to catch. These were all caught and released in the past 4 years or so. I have a lot more, but it won't let me upload any more than this.

Well, I believe that pike are one of the finest and best fighting freshwater fish. I fished for them for many years and continue to try for them, but there is now limited opportunity here in CT.
