We hate to hear getting skunked, but sometimes it happens. Even so, it beats working! You know, it might have been the lack of spirits; some Jim Beam may have helped :)

Welcome to fly fishing!you will love it. It truly is an art. You have received a lot of advice here. I have been involved in fly fishing o long time. My best advice to you is to forget everything you have heard here. It’s very confusing. Go to a local fly shop, tell them your new to the sport. Show them your current equipment. Ask if you have the proper line for the rod and be sure they see the reel. Once they advise proper line for you outfit. Ask that fly shop for a couple basic lessons in casting. They will give you great advice and you will learn the correct basics. If they provide a day with a guide take a day. Spend your money this way rather than updating rods reels line and other equipment. Use what you have, learn correct casting, go on the water with a pro and you will be off to a great start. Then practice what you learn. Good luck and have fun!!!

In the past I too was a fly fishing purist. Yes sir, I had the necklace with all the tippet material you could imagine and every size ever made. Everything had to match up or you were doing it wrong. Then one day I fished with this guy that was in his early 50's in Jackson Hole WY. This guy was catching cutthroat 4 to my one. When I asked him what he was doing he said glad you asked, and gave me this advice "Cuties have eyesight better than a hawk take that necklace with all those tippets sizes and put them by your fireplace for a decoration". "Get you a spool of 4 LB fluorocarbon line and use that as your tippet for anything you fish for. Don't let anybody tell you different." "Drys, wet, streamer, it dont matter just use the fluorocarbon and you will be releasing lots more fish". I used some of his and I am here to tell you he was right as rain. I now carry one spool of tippet material: 4 LB fluorocarbon and I have been catching more fish all over the country. If you decide to snub this tip as most older, fly fisher purists will just remember, as I did, you can always learn and that's what makes a great fisherman.

North west of the mouth of the Cuyahoga about 1/2-3/4 mile out. Water depth is 40 feet but they are suspended at 25 feet. You will see them on your fish finder.

Trolling spoons with orange and silver worked very well.

Probably a little late to this string but thought I would share my thoughts, I fish Lake Erie for Walleye, small mouths, large mouths and perch. I always use a swivel as I run braided line with fluorocarbon leaders. To eliminate the braided line from twisting I use a swivel at the end of the braided line which I attach to a barrel swivel then a 4 ft fluorocarbon leader to the lure. At the lure end I usually tie it on but certainly you could use another swivel. Each and every swivel I use is ball bearing. Braided line is expensive and I hate when it gets twisted. This method eliminates twisting and decreases problems when fishing. Just my thoughts.....

Sorry to hear about your community being ruined. I dont understand parts of what you are explaining: "Killed 80% of the weeds because they strangle the fish?? They killed the fish by strangulation and that made 80% of the weeds go away??

"The next severe storm, I plan to throw money at it to get it to go away?? Why do you need a severe storm and throw money at what?

"Good bless Dan" What??

I dont really need to have these questions answered, I was just trying to understand what it was you were saying.

You and I are the same vintage. Years ago my parents lived in Clearwater and my dad and I did lots of fishing under the causeway going out to Clearwater Beach. Are you a year round resident down there?

Old timers club is a great idea. Could have a boating pool, kinda like a car pool too.
I am guessing we are all from very different areas of the country though. :)

Wonder how you like it not being a boat owner. I'm 69 love being on the water really love being on the water and fishing!! Thinking of selling my boat as well. Retired about 9 months ago and concerned about the expenses. Don't have to get rid of it but the ol money situation changed and keep thinking about selling.

Must say I never ran into such a strong fishy taste in the Walleyes I have kept. Back in the early 70's when there was a large population of Shad in the lake some people detected a fishy taste in the larger Walleyes (24" and over) as they would eat the shad. Now they typically feast on the Emerald Shiners as the Shad a mostly gone. Normally for eating the 17-21" walleye are best. If your going to freeze the fillets for longer than a month I would recommend taking the "zipper" out of the center of the fillet. There is a gray stripe down the center of each fillet. I would remove that if the plan is to freeze for an extended period of time. If you cut a "V" the length of the gray stripe then you can pull it down the length of the fillet just like opening a zipper. All the that is left is the nice white meat. I normally do that on all the fillets.

Have you ever fished the Niagara river rapids as it widens to go to Lake Ontario. Great King salmon fishing in August and September. Salmon eggs is the ticket at that time of year. Tight lines!

I have not had the opportunity to fish that area. I do love fishing for Kings. Have had some success got Kings in upper Michigan. Thanks!

Hello everyone. I have just joined the website and look forward to hearing lots of new fishing ideas.

I have fished Lake Erie from Port Clinton, Ohio to Mentor Ohio for the past 50 years. Primarily I chase Walleye, Yellow Perch, Large mouth and Small mouth Bass. I also fly fish in the Lake Erie tributaries in the spring and fall for the Silver Bullets. (Steel head Trout).

Look forward to hearing a lot about fishing from everyone.

John
