I've never fished on a lake for stripers, only river fishing in central California. The big ones run up from the ocean in early spring, the smaller (males) ones tend to hang around all year. We call the small ones "shakers" and they're pretty easy to catch, in fact they'll steal your bait all day and all night, but they have to be 18" to keep. A buddy and I used to anchor in a hole on the Feather River and fish for catfish and stripers all night. We rigged the same for both and used mackerel or anchovies for bait. We caught way more cats than stripers, but we did catch some pretty nice stripers - 10, 12 pounders. Very good eating. I did see a lot of folks bank fishing out there and they were mostly throwing top water lures, see a lot of Zara Spooks, that type. I'd try both - sliding sinker rig and fish on the bottom, and throwing the Spook. And I've never heard of a striper having teeth. ?

Y'all enjoy your worms! I'm a catch and release guy. I've been fishing for over 65 years and if I never kill another one that'll be fine by me.

I sure will. I spent my youth (60 years ago) in canoes and just recently bought a kayak. I'm in my 70's now and I do a lot of fishing on lakes in the Sierra Mountains. When the wind comes up in the afternoon, as it usually does), it can be to be a real pain paddling and maneuvering back to base. I figure a small trolling motor is the perfect answer. I just need to figure out how to affix a mount to the damn thing. I bought an inexpensive Sun Dolphin and there's no transom at all, so I'm gonna have to do some modifications. Not a problem, I know some pretty handy folks, but if anyone has any advice or suggestions ........

I grew up in the mid-west and in the summer used to fish for pike in the boundary waters in northern Minnesota. We used to kill em with Johnson silver spoon with a piece of pork rind on it. And yes, we always used steel leaders. You might try some 80 pound rayon, not sure if they could bite through that.

One more thing - I learned years ago while canoeing that you need to tether everything to the boat thatyou don't want to loose. You are going to go in. Not a question of if, just when. Plan for the worst. And invest in a dry bag and put what you can in there - your cell phone, camera, lunch, water bottle.

Get the kayak. Get an angling kayak with transom on the stern. Save up and buy a trolling motor and marine battery - off you go. No gas and much more mobile, and you're on the water for less than $1000.

Yes. It is a pumpkinseed, which is in the same family as sunfish, bluegills, crappies, and believe it or not, large and small mouth bass. These tend to run small compared to most of the others, so if you caught a hand size one, that's a pretty nice pumpkinseed.

Don't tell the folks at Lamiglas that. Having said that I've owned a couple of their rods and I was not impressed. I fish mostly for trout and I swear by St. Croix. Best rods you can buy for around $100.

Hey everyone. New to this forum. I live in Northern California about 20 miles north east of
Sacramento. I fish the Sierra Mountain streams and lakes for trout and make the occasional trek to the coast to fish from the shore for surf perch. Bought a kayak last fall and am presently looking to modify it with a trolling motor. I am 71 and still not retired, but looking forward to that and all the fishing that comes with it. Also looking to simplify the whole fishing process - think Tenkara. So, hi!
