Redear is a shallcracker but you are right, it's a pumpkinseed.

Pumpkinseed. I've caught a few in brackish tidal waters in MD also, always gives me a surprise (typically they are found in freshwater but evidently are somewhat salt tolerant)

Pumpkinseed is correct. Or just plain ol' Sunny!
Yes. It is a pumpkinseed, which is in the same family as sunfish, bluegills, crappies, and believe it or not, large and small mouth bass. These tend to run small compared to most of the others, so if you caught a hand size one, that's a pretty nice pumpkinseed.
That is called a shellcracker, known for by the orangest red spot on gills
That is definitely a pumpkinseed!!! No way that is a shellcracker or bluegill. In Minnesota we have some large pumpkinseeds but they are harder to clean AND we have to watch for parasites and worms. The flesh is sightly darker but they taste about the same as the bluegills.

Down here in Alabama it’s a pumpkinseed, Lepomis gibbosus.

Redears & shellcrackers are the same fish, Lepomis microlophus.
